AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS
ARRIVAL IN ENGLAND RUGBY, April 23. Tlio Australian cricketers reached England today, ana were welcomed at Dover by Lord Harris and Colonel Troughtou, and at Victoria station, London, by Field-Marshal Lord Plainer (president of the Marylebone Club) and other prominent cricketers, including Messrs P. F. Warner, A. P. F. Chapman, H. D. G. Loveson-Govrer, J. Jfi. F. Mann, and A. H. Gilligan. The Australians seemed full of confidence that they would recover the “ ashes." A brief practice at Lord’s in tho afternoon was not a real try-out, the bowlers not attempting any strenuous efforts in view of the slippery ground and soft pitch. Nevertheless, most of them found their lain cl legs, tho batsmen shaping well. After watching the practice on a wicket which was almost a “mud heap,” Colonel Trevor wrote: “ Grimmctt clearly retains all. ins powers. Ho can pm a ‘ googly,’ and, what is more, ho can usually make his low delivery effective.” CAMERAMEN BUSY LONDON, April 21. From Naples to London the cricketers were at all times besieged with inter viewers ami cameramen, for whom they nearly always obligingly posed, Woodfull setting a good 'example in this respect. The loam’s footsteps were dogged everywhere in Paris. The cricketers, on boarding the Channel steamer, were surprised to find an army of photographers “shooting” them as they walked aboard and pestering them throughout tho crossing. Grimmett ana Kippax proved camera shy, while several photographers despairingly asked Mr Kelly, tho manager, the whereabouts of Bradman. Mr Kelly said: “ You have not a million to on© chance of getting him. He is a bad sailor, and is resting below,” Shortly afterwards Bradman was seen being led towards tho deck, where he posed. Even on arrival at their hotel at St. Pancras artists interrupted the players during tho meal while they took sketches of them:
