Mrs G. P. Sise has returned from Wellington. Mr and Mrs R. Gilkison returned today from Wellington. Miss Edith Howes has returned to Dunedin. Miss F. Rattray and Miss Tolmio left on Thursday morning for a trip to England. ' Mrs J. W. Manchester (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs W. B. Taverner, Lindsay road. Mr and Mrs J. P. M'Gowan left this morning for an extended tour abroad. Mrs C. J. Clery and Miss Molly Clery, Milton, are spending a six weeks’ holiday in Auckland. Miss Bundle (Auckland), who has returned from a holiday in Queenstown, is at present the guest of Mrs J. H. Fotheringham, Arthur street. Mrs R. Hughes and Miss Violet Hawkins left on Wednesday for Palmerston North, where they will bo the guests of Mrs T. Davidson. Mrs C. Speight, Mr Colin Speight, and Miss Winnie Speight left by the second express on Thursday to join the Rangitiki in Wellington en route for Britain and the Continent. Prior to her marriage Miss Jessie Rennie was entertained at a gift evening by Mr and Mrs J. Wilson, Grant street, and presented by the firm of Messrs Scott and Wilson with a diliner wagon, accompanied by many gifts from her fellow employees. Mrs Peter M'Laurin was hostess at a party on Wednesday afternoon in the Otago Women’s Club, given for her guest, Lady Carncross, Eltham. Among those present were Mesdames Cattail, Gascoigne, Cropp (Christchurch), Bridgman, Manhire, Osborn, and Miss Lo Brun. The Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) recently invested three prominent members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Wellington—Dr Platts-Mills, Mrs Barltrop, and Mrs Staee—with the insignia. These throe ladies were appointed to the grade of officers of the Order of St. John.
Mrs Duff, of .Cargill street, left by tho second express on Wednesday to join her son in London. Mr and Mrs Alex. Juriss and Miss Olga Juriss, of Christchurch, who have been on a short visit to Dunedin, have returned home. Tlio engagement is announced of Iris, second daughter of Mrs E. M. Gordon, of Otautau, Southland, to John Alexander, son of Mr and Mrs J. N. Taylor, of Dunedin South. Mrs Marshall Macdonald was hostess at a morning tea party on Tuesday given as a farewell to Mrs J. P. M'Gowan. Other guests were Mesdames Oldham, D’Arcy Haggitt, C. Reid, J. Milne, H. Guthrie, Misses E. Shand and Nicolson. Mrs M. Martin, who has been the guest of Mrs Robertson, Roslyn, left on Wednesday for England and America. A most enjoyable party was given for Mrs Martin by Mrs AlTvor at her residence, Tainui, on Tuesday evening. On Thursday afternoon Mrs Robertson gave a farewell tea for her guest prior to her departure. Many farewell parties were given for the Misses F. Rattray and Tolmio before their departure on Thursday lor England. Among hostesses were Mrs Mrs B. C. Haggitt, who gave an afternoon tea on Wednesday at the Tudor Hall, and Miss AULcan, who entertained on Wednesday morning at the Tudor Hall. A merry party of the “old brigade” of the George Street School journeyed to the Highcliff Cafe on Monday afternoon. There in the pleasant room amid exhilarating surroundings they renewed old friendships and exchanged anecdotes of old school days. Amongst those present wero Mesdames M‘Millan, Jorgensen, Murray, Pryor (Wellington), Seegar, Trevithick (Melbourne), Reynolds (Te Araroa, Hawke’s Hay), Cameron (Timaru), Timmings (Alexandra), Edge (Gore), D. Campbell, G. Campbell, Hopkins, Walker, Lilly, Hervey, Price, Robinson, Misses Wain, Dippie, Hervey, Campbell. Tho programme arranged by members of tho Society of Women Musicians of Otago to bo given in tho Town Hall concert chamber on April 30 is one of outstanding merit. The many friends of Miss Koa Oliver will welcome the opportunity of hearing her play once more after her absence in England and on tho Continent Interesting items wii! be contributed by Miss Meda Paine’s ladies’. choir, and madrigals in costume will bo rendered by Miss Ida White’s ladies’ choir. Instrumental trios, piano duos, vopal and violin solos will all belt) to make a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Tho Cavcrsham branch of the Home Economics Association held its weekly meeting at tho residence of its leader, Mrs 51‘Gregor, on April 23, at 8 p.m. Two new members joined, and were warmly welcomed. Tho subject selected for study for the evening was ‘ Feeding of the - Child, and Why.’ A bos. from the home science extension bureau was opened, and every member received a folder to read and study. The subject is of vital interest to mothers rearing young children, and reasons for giving certain foods were fully expounded. Tho subject of suitable foods for children is too big to be dealt with here, but other branches ana recommended to obtain and study this box. Tho Dunedin League of Mothers held its April meeting on Thursday afternoon last in the Y.M.C.A. lecture room. Mrs W, A. Ross presided over some fifty-five members. Dr North addressed the members, ‘ Tho Obstetrical Chair: Its Appeal to Women,’ being his subject. The advance of obstetrics was traced through the centuries to the present day, when the authorities had awakened to the necessity for a higher standard of training, resulting in an Empire world movement, of which the New Zealand obstetrical ’ endowment fund was but a part. During the afternoon songs were rendered by Miss Peggy Howie and pianoforte solos by Miss Barbara Gibbs. Mrs Aslin thanked Dr North. Afternoon tea was served. Tho annual report for New Zealand of tho St. John Ambulance Brigade is to hand, amd contains among other interesting items some account of the work of tho nursing division. Dunedin records 122 cases and Caversham IUG cases (nursed privately) This work is of great use in tho community, and more recruits aro urgently needed to train as workers in the nursing division. The Otago Brigade has secured new rooms in Moray place. Situated as they aro in one of the main streets of, the city, they should prove a great help to the cause, and it is hoped there will be an increased attendance at tho classes and parades during the winter months. At a recent meeting held in Caversham it was decided to form a cadet division (girls) for that district. There was an attendance of thirty, and a great deal of enthusiasm was shown. Incidental to tho festivities in connection with the George Street School jubilee two ox-pupils, Mrs W. J. Jorgenson, of Seatoun. and Mrs J. Murray, of Wellington, entertained some of their friends and schoolmates at afternoon tea in the Tudor Hall on Tuesday. Among the guests wero Mrs J. Carter (Wellington), Mrs F. Lambeth, Sirs W.
