DUNEDIN HOSPITAL GUILD

ANNUAL MEETING Mr David Todd presided over an attendance of about thirty members at •the thirty-eighth annual meeting of the Dunedin Hospital Guild, held on Thursday afternoon in the First Church Hall. , , In his opening remarks the Chairman said that the attainment of the thirty-eighth year of existence of the o-uild said a great deal for what had Seen done bv the members, and also showed that the work was being appreciated by the hospitals to which garments were sent annually. During the years the guild had been in operation Its borders had been expanded, and continued to do so, as shown by tho addition of the Forth Street Hospital to the guild’s list last year. The annual report stated:—“Tho following 234 garments were sent to the James Powell Convalescent Home, Warrington eighty nightdresses, sixty-six knickers, twenty-three singlets, twenty-five vests, seven dressingjackets, and thirty-three chemises, To Sister Barclay (St. John Ambulance) were sent eighty-four garments, comprising thirty-three nightdresses, fifteen vests, nineteen singlets, eight pairs of socks, six dressing jackets, three chemises; Miss M.‘Nab (the hospital hostess) received thirty-one garments as follows thirteen nightdresses, five singlets, ten knickers, and three chemises. The children’s ward of the General Hospital received the following ninety-eight garments—sixty singlets, seven dressing gowns, twelve pairs of slippers, twelve- caps, fivo jackets, one square, and one bonnet. We were also able to enlarge our sphere of usefulness this year by sending forty-nine garments to the Forth Street Hospital. These were particularly acceptable, tho matron assures us, on account of the indigent circumstances of many of the witients. The garments sent were _ twelve nightdresses, thirty-one singlets, and six knickers. Our grand total for the year amounts to 490 garments. We have now a membership of 177, having gained sixteen additional members during tho year, among them four men subscribers. Wo would welcome more of the sterner sox. Miss N. Callender, our efficient hon, treasurer, was granted a year’s leave of absence on, account of illness. Miss M. Hutchison kindly stepped into tho breach, joining the guild solely to fill tho vacancy pro tem. Your committee is most grateful to her for her willing and capable assistance, and thank her sincerely. Wo are indeed glad to report that Miss Callender has so far recovered as to be able fo resume her duties as treasurer. Wo all welcome her back. In February Mrs Ramsay, the last of the original band of members, passed to her rest. She occupied the position of president from 1915 to 1920, and from 1926 till the time of her death she was honorary president. A beautiful floral tribute was sent on bohalf of the guild. This was subsequently acknowledged by Miss Ramsay with grateful thanks. The following arc thanked for their welcome donations: —Mrs Eastabrook, Sir John Roberts, Miss W. Hislop, Mrs Glendinning, Lady Ross, Mrs John Cook (Roslyn)._ Several monetary gifts appear in tho balance-sheet. Tho treasurer reports a credit balance of £lB 15s 9d. Wo thank the deacons’ court of First Church for the use of their hall for our meetings, and wo are grateful to Mr David Todd for his services as auditor and as chairman of the annual meeting.’’ In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mrs R. W. Glendinning (president) stated that the year’s work had concluded satisfactorily. The guild had not made as many garments last year as in the previous term, but anything up to 500 articles a year was very good. She considered they might very well congratulate themselves on the year’s activities. Miss Alves seconded tho motion, and in so doiim said she would like to mention the happy manner in which tho members met during the winter months to mako tho garments for charity. The members attended as though for pleasure and not for work at all. A vote of thanks was passed to the office-bearers for their duties during tho past year. Several representatives from institutions receiving garments from tho guild were in attendance, and took the opportunity of thanking the members for their much-appreciated contributions of clothing from time to time. Tho Chairman mentioned tho fact that, as regarded finance, the guild had £6OO in legacies, which brought in interest at tho rate of £3O a year. This was very fine, but he noticed that they were now spending a great deal more annually for materials. However, this was accounted for by the fact that more people were being supplied. It was also pleasing to note that tho year had commenced with a credit balance of £ll, and after paying all expenses they had finished up with £lB to the good. Tho motion was put to tho meeting and carried unanimously. The election of office-bearers resulted:—President, Mrs R. W. Glondinning; _ vice-presidents, Mesdames Henry Reid and D. M. Spedding, sen.; hon. . treasurer. Miss ' N. Callander; hon. secretary, Mrs David Todd; committee—Mesdames J. Ash, A. R. Benjamin, R. S. Brown, C. Greonslade, J. Romison, and J. C. Stephens, and Misses M. Adams and G. Davidson.
