LADIES’ HOCKEY

LAST SEASON’S WORK REVIEWED At the annual meeting of the Otago Ladies’ Hockey Association the following report will be submitted. by the executive: — Grade Matches. —The usual grade matches were played during the season, and in both A and B grades the standard of play showed improvement. In the A grade twelve teams entered (an increase of three on last year). The cup was won by Training College, with 22 points. University I. being run-ners-up with 20 points. In the B grade there were sixteen teams (an increase of two on last year), Training College 1 winning with 25 points and Momona I being runners-up with 22 points. Schools Hockey.—ln ; the schools hockey .the number of teams is much the same ,as last year, but the keenness and enthusiasm of both players and teachers have brought the play'of most of tho teams to a really excellent standard. Secondary schools: This season ,tl number of entries received was twelve; O.G.H.S. won the cup, with Columba A second and Technical School A third. Primary schools; In the -A grade Mosgiel wore the winners with II points, and High Street runners-up with 9 points. In the B grade Green Island came top with 15 points, Concord being second with 14 points. The aoven-a-side tournament was won by High Street, and they hold the Millie Hudson Cup for the season. Soven-a-side Tournament. —The annual seven-a-side tournament wad held on Juno 3 at Logan Park. The number of entries in tho A grade was 24 and in the B grade 32, the total .of 56 being a record number. The entries included 27 from the town clubs and 29 from the country clubs. The A grade was played off in three sections. Technical Old Girls, and Watea being- the respective whiners. In the semi-finals Triangle defeated Technical Old Girls by 1 goal to 0 and in the final Triangle beat Watea by 2 coals to 0, and so carried off the ShackTock Cup. The B grade contest was divided into four sections, the winners of each section being Alexandra District High School, Middlemarch, Bruce, and Otago. In the semi-finals Alexandra D.H.S. defeated Middlemarch by 4 goals to 1, and Bruce defeated Otago by3goalstoo. In tho final of the B grade Alexandra D.H.S. defeated Bruce by 1 goal to 0. Snb-assoeiation. —During the year tho sub-associations Vincent and Tuapeka, which fori, several years had been affiliated to the Otago Association, decided to form the Central Otago Association, and were now affiliated direct with the New Zealand Association,. Empire Tournament. —They were sorry to state that the proposal to send a New Zealand team to the South African tournament had to be eventually abandoned owing to lack of finance, but they were pleased to be able to state that at least one Otago player was included in the team chosen, and a second one was in the first tliree reserves. Representative Matches.—Tiie following matches were played during the season;—Otago 6. South Otago 0; Otago 7, Cent-al 0; Otago 7, Maniototo 1; Otago 1, North Otago 2; Otago 3 Southland 3 Grounds.—Last season they were deprived of the use of one of their grounds on the Oval, which was being improved for play, but were granted the use of extra grounds at Montecillo and JLogan Park. Tho 1 ground bn the Oval was a much better-ground than in previous years, as the City Council had raised it and improved it generally. Towards the close of the season the North Ground was also improved, and they hope that it would be a drier ground than in previous years. They wished to thank Mr Tannock and also Mr Hancock for their unremitting attention to their grounds. Finance.—The balance-sheet disclosed quite a sound financial position, the cash in hand being £143 2s sd. This balance' was loss than last year by about £25. 'This was due to tours of their representative teams to North and Central Otago and to Soul and, there bein • only one match held in Dun-edin--that against South Otp£o—from which any “gate” was received. The, above credit balance does not include the sum of about £9O. _ which was raised by means of donations and the art union f- the Empire tournament fund- This amount would probably be transferred to their own tournament fund, which meantime had a debit balance of £3O 0s 4d.
