CROQUET
It it intended to devote tome space in •acb Saturday’s issue to items of interest to croquet players. The secretaries of the various clubs are asked to tend in notes to “ Diana ” not later than Wednesday in each week Correspondence is invited and inquiries as to fine points of the game or other matters connected with croquet will be answered «s far as possible.
The monthly meeting of the Otago Association will bo held on Tuesday next at 2 p.m. The results of the interclub matches played on Thursday are as follows: — Balclutha 105 v. Punga 103 (played at Balclutha). Balclutha team: Mesdames Lattinier, Reid, Buchanan, Allan, Lothian, and Miss Stewart. Punga team: Mesdames J. M'Donald, Rigby, Scofield, Vernon Smith, Ferguson, and Moodie. The Balclutha Club entertained the visiting players royally, Mrs Grigor lending her house and lawn for their entertainment. The Punga players found the lawns a trifle heavy at first, the contest was a very enjoyable one.
Caversham 85 v. St. Clair 82. Caversham team: Mesdames Hayes, Saxton, Will, Newson, Graham, and Archer. St. Clair team: Mesdames Anderson, Johnston, Webster, Mitchell, Beuth, and Miss f Mee. Leith 99 v. Balmacewen 85.—Leith. Mesdames D. Mitchell, Warren, Long, Munro, Withers, and Forrest. Bal macewen team: Mesdames Macdonald, Hindle, Lambeth, M'lntosh, Watson, and Miss Millar. OTAGO ASSOCIATION’S TOURNAMENT. The association is to be congratulated on the very excellent tournament just concluded. On Tuesday afternoon the president, Mrs W. Bridgman, entertained the committee of the association, competitors and keepers at a garden party on the Punga lawns. Afternoon tea was served from the pavilion, where the tables were very daintily decorated by Mrs Benzoin. After the presentation of the trophies to the winners in the various events, the following- presentations were made to those who had helped to make the tournament so successful. Tournament manager, Mrs _ Manhire; assistant manager, Mrs Nesbit; refreshment room manager, Mrs Mitchell; secretary, Mrs White. The presidents of the different clubs then congratulated the officials of the tournament on the manner in which it had been carried out, and on the success which had been such a prominent feature of it. The president, Mrs Bridgman, was given a beautiful bouquet of scarlet carnations. Last Tuesday evening, at the residence of Mrs Thomas Brown, “Broomlands,” saw the formation of a new club to bo called the “Montecillo Croquet Club.” The meeting was an enthusiastic one, and the keen interest that is being displayed in this branch of sport was shown by the enrolment of thirty-five members. Mr H. S. Reid was elected to the chair, and the Croquet Association was represented by Mrs White, whose remarks on croquet matters generally were very interesting. Friendly advice was also given by Mrs J,. M‘{)onald, president of the Punga Clu h. Mr Tannock gave valuable advice in regard to the laying of the lawns, and his interest in the formation of the new club was greatly appreciated. The following officebearers were elected; —President, Mr H. Jslip; senior vice-president, Miss M'Millan; junior vice-president, Mrs Thomson; secretary, Mr A. Milhed; treasurer, Mrs Rhodes; committee— Mesdames Pritchard, Frapwell, Davis, Miss Macdonald, Messrs C. B, _ Smith, and 11. S. Reid. It was to make immediate application to the Dunedin City Corporation for a site on the Montecillo reserve for two full sized lawns to he laid down. A vote of thanks was recorded to Mrs Brown for oovening the meeting, and for the uso of her house for holding same. .
