JOHN M'GLASHAN COLLEGE

' MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the John M'Glashan College Board was held m First Church Hall yesterday. * The chairman of ; the board (Mr T. G. Ross) The principal (Mr Gilray) reported %n increase in the school roll. The year opened on February 4, with 134 names on the roll, 54 of these being boarders. There were 80 in the secondard school and 54 in the primary department. The staff was the same as last j’eai’,'with the addition of Mr A. D. G. Blanc, who was teacher of biology, and Air 6. W. Johnstone, who was in charge of voice production and speech training. In the November and December examination results, the principal reported that satisfactory returns had been obtained. E M. Elder, mimed fourth place in the University National Scholarship list, and W. S. Gilkison and J. M. S. Ross obtained credit passes. Higher leaving certificates' Wove awarded to ten members of Form VI. At the break-up ceremony on December 12 Sir Charles Fergusson, Bart., G.C.M.G., had addressed the school, and’Lady Alice Fergusson had! presented the prizes. He then inspected the cadets, who paraded as a guard of honour, and complimented them on theif steadiness on parade. Sir Charles and Lady Alice Fergusson had shown very great interest in the college,, and had since presented their signed photographs to the school, and had also been pleased to present a beautiful silver challenge cup as a prize for the newly-established, class in biology. The cup was inscribed' on the one suiu with the Vive-Regal arms and on the other with the Fergusson crest. Last year’s Form VI. had presented to the college library five valuable volumes .of essays as a mark of their appreciation of the facilities offered by the library. Mrs T. C. Ross had given to the library Mr Stanley Baldwin s volume of addresses entitled On togla Seven N.C.O.’s from the college had attended the secondary school camp at Burnham, and C. 0. Hutton, one of last year’s N.C.O.’s had attended the course for cadets seeking commissioned rank, and had passed the practical test. The principal intimated, in referring to the death of J. E. E. Blomfield, (vho lost his life at Mount Cook, that the old boys intended to erect a memorial tablet in the college.
