BRITISH SHIPYARDS
OBSOLETE ONES TO BE SCRAPPED RATIONALISATION OF INDUSTRY NECESSARY. I*res* Awoolation—Bj Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 27. The elimination of redundant and obsolete shipyards, more economical working through concentrated production, and financial assistance to shipbuilders are among the avowed objects of the National Shipbuilders’ Security, Limited, which has been registered with a nominal capital of £IO,OOO, with power to borrow to £3,000,000. Tho promoters point out that consolidation has been in progress steadily during the past two years, but further concentration is imperative. Warshipbuilding, which before tho war represented 25 per cent, of the total tonnage, is now a mere one-seventh. Britain maintains supremacy in the industry, but rationalisation is necessary to place it permanently on a sound basis. Most of the big yards favour the scheme.
