POLICE COURT
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) FAILING TO CLOSE SHOP, J. M'Auley and Son were charged with failing to close the shop at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5. Mr A. T. Grundison, of the Labour Department, stating that defendant had a shop in King Edward street, and delivered meat in Macandrew Hay after 1 o’clock on a Wednesday, which was the statutory half-day.—Mr W. Ward appeared for the defendants, and state<i that the breach was a purely technical one.— Defendants were fined the amount of court costs (10s). AFFILIATION ORDER. Convicted of a serious offence in respect to a girl under the age of 16 years, and now serving a sentence in prison, Francis Joseph Gantley, in evidence at Christchurch, reiterated that he was not present on the evening on which the offence was alleged, and emphatically denied paternity of the child of the girl in question when applications for affiliation and maintenance orders were made against him. Mr Irwin appeared for the complainant, and after hearing evidence on her behalf the Magistrate made an order adjudging defendant the father of the child. As Gantley is a married man and now undergoing a sentence, it was impossible to make a 1 maintenance order. MOTORISTS’ OFFENCES, Charged with driving a motor cycle at night without a light, Alexander Barron was fined IDs and costs. George William Collie (Mr E. J. An dersou) was fined 20s and costs for dangerous driving, Sub-inspector Cummings stating that defendant had driven n motor car round the corner of Richardson street at a dangerous speed, but that otherwise he was a careful driver A couviction only was entered against Bernard Cleveland, who was charged with being an unlicensed motor driver Samuel Ellaby Ferguson admitted that he failed to keep to the left of the centre line while driving a motor car, and was fined 10s and costs. For driving, motor vehicles without licenses |Richard‘Edward Hill, George Macaulay Kinmont, and Henry Martin M'Laughlan were each fined 5s and costs. For failing to stop a motor vehicle at the signal of a constable John Andre.w_ Orlowski was fined 10s and costs, i Being in charge of an unlighted motor car cost Robert, Charles Love a fine of os and costs. For permitting their motor cars to create obstructions in High street Thomas M'Gregor and Albert Joseph Van Osselear were each fined 20s and bests. ’ Charles'Stewart Desmond Smaill was fined 10s and costs for driving a motor vehicle at night without a rear reflector. .For parking .his . motor car within 30ft of an intersection Patrick William O’Farrell was Sped 5s and costs. William Wilson was fined 5s and costs for riding his bicycle on the footpath. ‘ with failing to report a motor accident, Alexander M'Kinlay was_ fined 50s and costs,-a charge of failing to stop a motor car after an accident being withdrawn. BREACH OF PROHIBITION. John Hussey was fined 10s and costs for procuring liquor while he was prohibited. CHIMNEY FIRE. Mary Crawfoj-cl, charged with suffering a chimney to catch; fire, - was convicted and v discharged;.' ■ HOTEL - LICENSEE FINED. Charles' Burrell (Mr Hanlon) was charged with exposing liquor for sale after hours, Mr Hanlon stating that the case had been adjourned for a week in order that defendant might make arrangements to dispense with the services of his son. As far as the police were concerned, he understood that they would be satisfied if defendant would not employ his son in, connection with the sale of liquor by day or night. The Magistrate said that he hesitated to endorse the license when .defendant had borne a good reputation for thirty years. An undertaking that. the, son would not take part in the management of the hotel would have to be given. Defendant was fined £lO and costs. INTERESTING POINT RAISED. ' ‘‘This is a case of some,importance to garage proprietors who assemble cars in one place and drive them bo another for the; purpose of sale,” said Mr Bannerman, who appeared * for James Emerson ,'M‘Donald, charged with driving an unregistered motor car. Mr Bannerman said that; tho facts were admitted. The, ear was assembled in Christchurch, amj defendant drove 'it to Gore under its demonstration plate, the car being’sold two or three days later. Counsel contended that defendant was driving the car in the course of his business. / The Magistrate reserved his decision.
