NATIONAL RIFLE MEETING

FIRST DAY’S SHOD! SERVICE MATCHES [Pm Unhid Tress Association.] TRENTHAM, February 27. Under the conditions that prevailed at Trcutham it was fully expected that tho shooting in tho service series would bo above the average, but anticipations wem not realised. Last year T. Boon (Karori) won the rapid shooting with a score of 43, which was not improved upon to-day, and the winner of the snapshooting event was five points belov A. Devore, of Auckland, who was successful in 1929. The tile competition and moving target proved tfio downfall of many experienced marksmen. clean targets being frequent. Deliberate shootists were compelled to give place to men whose brain and eyesight worked more quickly in unison and who were practiced in reloading with gun at shoulder, 11. Croxton (Karori) won the title last year with a score of 45, being five points better than this vear. Colonel E. Smith (Dunedin), with 27. won the moving target event in 1929. J. Kearney ban obtained an aggregate of 177 for the Service Championship, next in order being A. Devore, 153. Tho former, who won the, King’s Medal at the last Army meeting, cannot fail, to secure tho Ross Carbine Belt. Major-General Young, commander or tho forces, and Brigadier Sinclair Burgess were interested spectators on the range to-day. It was considered by many contestants that better results would accrue provided the service series were held later in the meeting. It was pointed out that tho younger competitors were new to tho range, and were not familiar with the mounds and wore unacquainted witli the somewhat tricky requirements. The Prisons Department is engaged in improving the ranges. Each is being band delved, as it is impossible to plough on account of the presence or submerged timber. When completed tho area will resemble a huge lawn. The work is not undertaken in the interests of the Defence Department, but in order that tho maximum grazing may • be secured for stock.
