In the House of Commons, Hr Arthur Henderson (Foreign Secretary) was asked whether, negotiations had taken place with the Portuguese Government regarding the construction of the Zambesi bridge. In replying, he said that on July 2 last Mr Francis D’Arcy Osborne (British Charge d’Affaires at Lisbon) informed the Portuguese Government that the British Govern) t had for some time past been considering the question of constructing the bridge, and was contemplating the por ibihty of guaranteeing from Imperial funds tho necessary sums. Mr Osborne expressed the hope that in tho event of tlto British Government deciding to participate in the venture the Portuguese Government would facilitate tho construction of the bridge and generally extend its goodwill towards tho scheme. In a reply he had received last August the Portuguese pointed out that the proper guarantees had already been given in connection with five existing concession. In the absence of further particulars it could not make any definite statement, but it gave an assurance that it was anxio’-s to facilitate tho projected enterprise in every way possible.
