OTAGO BOARD MEETS The Otago Education Board met this morning, there being present the chairman (Mr J. Wallace), -Messrs G. Livingstone, J. Smith, J. Horn, J. H. Wilkinson, R. H. S. Todd, W. R. Brugh, and the Hon. D. T. Fleming. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. , The Green Island Committee applied for a subsidy for improving the school grounds. The committee proposed 10 spend £SO on the work, and requested a similar amount from both the board and the department. —The application was granted. The Island Cliff’s Committee’s application for concrete work round the school, at an estimated cost of £2*l, of which the committee would find £B, was granted. The application of the Ravensbonrne Committee to ho allowed to erect an up-to-date fence on the south side i f the school in place of tho present halfdead hedge was granted. The High Street Committee made an application for tho erection of a rough bin in _ which to store coke, at a cost of £2O. ’ This was granted. The Forbury Committee was granted permission to use the old teachers’ room in the school as a dental clinic. The Waikouaiti Committee applied for a subsidy to erect a netting wire fence to protect the younger children from cricket balls. “ Why should ve subsidise this?” said Mr Wallace.— The application was • declined. MR LYNSKEY’S PROMOTION. “ I think we should congratulate Mr Lynskey upon his appointment, and Nelson on getting such a senior inspector,” said Mr Wallace, when the department officially notified the board of Mr Lynskey’s promotion. His position at Dunedin will be filled by Mill. W. D. Maxwell, of Hastings. PRIVATE PROPERTY FLOODINGS. A complaint was received from Mr Poole, at Broad Bay, regarding storm water from the school ground flooding his property. The Architect (Mr Rodger) reported that there was no doubt about the natural water-course being through the school ground. The board was therefore obliged to take it. Since the grading of the ground was carried out, there was an even fall, both to the front road line and to Mr Poole’s property, and in time of heavy rain, water flowed on to his land, destroying ins garden. He estimated the cost of' a satisfactory job at £65. The matter was referred to the board’s solicitors, for an opinion. BENDIGO SCHOOL. A request was received from Mrs Dane to consider the question of moving the Bendigo School to a new site near Lindis Crossing, or, as an alternative, to have some temporary building erected there large enough to hold ten or eleven children. The children concerned are too young to ride tr drive to another school. It was decided to ask Mrs Dane tor further particulars of the present position. CARNEGIE CORPORATION GIFT. An intimation from the department that it had forwarded to the Training College two parcels of books on educational subjects, which had been donated by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, was acknowledged with thanks. DEPARTMENTAL AFFAIRS. The department regretted that through lack of funds, it would mt bo possible to provide a grant for die rebuilding of tho Pine Hill School during the current financial year.—Noted. The department also intimated that a grant had been made for the erection of a fourth room at the Tainui School.

The department,' in acknowledging receipt ot the board’s plans showing various types of class rooms and the accommodation that could be provided if single desks and chairs were used in lieu of dual desks, stated that ihe whole question would receive the department’s careful consideration.— Received. •
