THE BOYS’ BRIGADE
ANNUAL CAMP AT HAMPDEN The South Island camp of the Boys’ Brigade was held at Hampden from December 26 to January 3. The boys slept: in tents, but the school ■ gymnasium was used for'meals and evening entertainments. .Over sixty lads were unde’r canvas from Ist and 3rd Dunedin, Ist. Southland (Winton), and Ist Christchurch companies. The boys arrived in camp on Boxing Day, and by night were safely encamped in a paddock kindly lent by Mr Andrew Aitchison. - ■ The , following routine was observed in camp:—7 a.ni., reveille; J. 15, morning prayers; 8, breakfast; 9.15, tent inspection ;■ 9.45, battalion drill; 10.15, signalling and ambulance; 11, swimming, parade; 12.30, dinner; 2 p.m,, sports, rambles, etc.; 5.30, tea; 8, retreat; 8-9.30, sing-song; 9.30, first post; 9145, last post; 10, lights out. On Saturday night (December 28) the prepared speech contest for the Grocott Cup was held, and resulted in a win for Private N. Felton (Ist Dunedin)-. 85 poitits. Corporal J. Cowie (Ist Southland), 80 points, was second, and Private T. Whiteside (Ist Dunedin), 79 points, third. .The subject was, ‘ The Spiritual Influence of the B. on the New Zealand Boy.’ There were eight competitors. The ambulance examination- was held on the Tuesday afternoon, and was conducted bv Sir Louis Barnett, C. F.R.C.S., Messrs A. S. Jenkins (head master of the local school), and George D Fisher (late R.A.M.C.). Four teams were entered, the result being as follows:
Sir Louis said he was surprised at the , high standard of the boys’ work, and said that' evidently the Boys’ Brigade was doing a great work. A church parade was held on the Sunday morning at the Presbyterian Church. The lesson was read by Captr,in H. Grocott (Ist Dunedin), and the address by the Rev. P. L. A. Crampton (chaplain, 3rd Dunedin Company). The sermon was preached by the Rev. A. J. Davis, who took his text from I. Chronicles, 13,. xxxviii. He showed how all the valiant men of Israel who could keep rank came to make David King. .He drew some interesting lessons from drill commands, such as halt; attention,' stand at ease,, mark time, and march. At- the close of the evenin'; service, Cantain the aims and methods of the 8.8. New Year’s-Day was sports .and visitors’ day. There were - a number of local and Dunedin people present, while soffie motored , through from Winton. The Ist Southland gained most points im the sports, and succeeded in winning MV F. Z. Moore’s trophy (a football). Following are the detailed results:— —Junior Section (12 to 13). —

Most Points in Intermediate Events.; —Private N. Felton (Ist Dunedin). _ Most Points in Junior Events.—Private L. Lindsay (Ist Southland). The signalling competition resulted in a win for the Ist Dunedin. The examination was conducted by Mr E. H. Langford, M.C., late Array Signallers, who expressed satisfaction at the standard reached. Results!—
Competition for the .best-kept tent was very keen, and the boys deserve great credit for the manner in which the tents were kept. Corporal Smith’s tent, with 95 marks, won the shield. Corporal J. Cowie’s tent, with 78.5 marks, second, and Lance-corporal E. Hogg and H. Lilicq’s tent, 77.5 marks, third. , All three tents'Were members of the. Ist Southland

They gained 311 points; 3rd Dunedin were • second with 215 points, and Ist Dunedin (the holders), third with J 92 points. • • The object of the brigader- ,f The,Advancement of Christ’s Kingdom among boys, and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, and self-respect,’’ was well to the fore, and under the guidance of the Rev. P. ,L. A. Crampton, several were won forth* groat Captain, Jesus Christ.
