SCHOOLMASTER DROWNED. John Fitzgerald, aged twenty-eight, single, a schoolmaster at Inangahna, Westport, while on a holiday visit to his uncle, Mr P. Fitzgerald, Opotiki, was drowned in the Waioeka River. The deceased with two children went for a row on the river. The boat struck a snog and capsized. The children swam ashore, but the deceased failed, to come up to the surface. An alarm* was given and the body was recovered, but artificial respiration proved fruitless. THREE MEN INJURED. Three men named W. Ward, H. Spurdle. and J. Hogg suffered injuries last night when their car fell over the Wangaehu Hill. The car attempted to pass a lorry and ran off the road through a fence. All the injured men were conveyed to the Wanganui Hospital. . ACCIDENTAL DROWNING. A verdict of accidental drowning while bathing in the river at Rere oil New Year’s Day was returned at the inquest on the Rev. Adolph Alexander Barham, of Gisborne. Tiie deceased's companions stated that Mr Barham, who was unable to swim, appeared to take a fainting turn, and fell off » rocky ledge into deep water.—Press Association telegram. ~

CYCLIST SERIOUSLY INJURED. An Association message from Gisborne states that a young man uauifd Christopher Jobson, who was returning from the pictures at Tolagn iSfjy late last evening, was injured sernruy when his cycle swerved in front of att overtaking lorry driven by Dave Tautau. The injured man was not att expert cyclist, and evidently, became confused by the noise of the approaching lorry, which left the crown of the road to pass him, but failed to avoid a collision when Jobson also swerved. Jobson’s condition was reported as,serious to-day. His injuries are believed to include a fractured skull and a broi ken arm.
