NOTES ON THE EVENTS

[By St. Claie.] The Invercargill Cup Meeting opened in ideal summer weather, and before a very large attendance, £1,004 4s 6d being taken at the gates, an increase of £45 on last year’s receipts from this source. The track ,was holding when the programme commenced, and inclined to cut up a little, but with rolling after each race and the diving sun it was in quite good order when the latter races were run. Mr M'lvor handled his big fields at the barrier well, but there was a scramble just as the tapes were released for the cup, and the favourite. Celerity li., got the worst of it. At the finish of the New Year Handicap Valuator appeared to win from the press stand, High Speed, who finished fast, just failing to get up, and this opinion was endorsed by the judge when he hoisted the numbers, but fie had the third horse misplaced, add took thef down and then placed High Speed first and Valuator second. Whether this was right or not it was not possible to tell from the angle of the press stand as there was so little between them, but the judge gave the official distance as a length and a-halt. Other than this Mr Ireland gave ins decisions promptly and well. The racing was interesting throughout the afternoon, but favourites fared badly. Antrim Boy won the Avenal Hurdles very easily, leading all the wav. Beauty Light pulled up very lame, and will not race again for a W Compensation let his backers down badly in the Two-year-old Handicap, and appeared to strike some ham going racing across the top. Water Power a half-sister by Tractor to Master Sandstone, won this race very convincingly, and returned a good figure dividend. ' , . , „„ Meadow Lark showed too much class in the Flying Handicap for the opiposition. and buried them for pace m the final furlong. Caterpillar, the favourite, had every chance, but was never able to shake Blue Metal off,_and she was beaten at the end of five ,^ u r v l on f $ ' High Speed gained a doubtful decision over Valuator in the New rear Handicap. „ , Glare won the Invercargill Cup because he was the best stayer in the race. After the first half-mile he was always well placed, and, getting a good run over the last two furlongs, won comfortably from Night Lad, who was again ridden by W. Hogan. Celerity 11., who has never run a 'good race on the Invercargill track, got knocked back last at the start, and continued to tail up / the field until less than three furlongs from home, when she made a forward move, but she made. no impression on the leaders, and only Black Duke was behind her at the finish. Wingatui rim herself out at the end of a mile, and Royal Saxon was done with at the home turn. _ „,. t . One of the outside division in Ihrirt led all the way in the Oreti Harness Trot,i and beat another outsider in Erin’s Advance by a narrow margin. The winner returned a big dividend. Impertinence, a good favourite, was much too igood for the opposition m the Waikiwi Handicap, winning nicely from the second favourite, Abbeville. t Camisader ran right up to his u yndham ‘Cup fo m by beating a useful held in the Waihopai Handicap, Lucky Light, who ,vas a good favourite, stopping badly in the dip three furlongs from home and finished second last.

Antrim Boy was established a good favourite for the Avenal Hurdles, Beauty, Light; who moved very tenderly in his preliminary’ being a good second choice, and Tied Heather and Gayoma next fancied. Nincompoop led Antrim Boy and Gayoma over the first hurdle, but hit the next two very hard, and Red Heather went on with the favourite, Beauty Light running into third place at the.end of six furlongs. An trim. Boy showed Red Heather round the far turn and across the ,top, and was four lengths clear of Ked Heather and Beauty Light at the last fence, drawing out to win by five lengths from Red Heather, who beat Beauty Light by half’a length. Gayoma and Calhdm were next and Nincompoop fell at the last hurdle.

- Compensation, ith B. H. Brodie up, was backed down to a short odds-on price in the Hopeful Handicap for two-year-olds, being nearly three times as well backed as Shirada, or Rosy Morn. The labourite was first to show out, but after going a furlong Shirada ran past him, and after rounding the far turn Charmaine ran to -the front and led Shirada and Water' Power to the home turn, where Shirada dropped out. Water Power shook off Charmaine at the distance, and beat her home by three lengths. Rosy Morn was a short length away third, followed by the favourite and Shirada.

• # # « In the Fljdug Handicap Royal Saxon, Subdivision, Royal Tractor and Inevitable were withdrawn, and Caterpiller was sent out a much better favourite than Meadow, Lark, who was just a little .better backed than Jack a Dandy. Blue Metal or Sudden Storm. Francolin was started from a couple of lengths behind the line Caterpillar and Meadow lark wore the first to show out, with Jack a Dandy next. After going a furlong Caterpillar was showing clear from Blue Metal, and this pair were followed round the far turn by Coomassie, Meadow Dark and Jack a Dandy. There wac no change in tho leading positions racing across the top, but the favourite on the rails had a slight advantage from Blue Metal and Coomassie Meadow Lark, Francolin and Jack a-Dandy were next as they turned into the straight. Once in the straight Meadow Lark put in a great run, Which carried him to the front, and he won fairly comfortably by a length and a-half from Blue Metal. Jack a Dandy finished very fast, ahd was half a length in front of Francolin, who got a bad run in the straight. Caterpillar and Rin Tin Tin were next. * * • ft Owing to the withdrawal of Salmo Salar, Positive, Wise Choice, Lorette, Quinopal, and Solace from tho New Year Handicap it was not necessary to run the race in divisions. The field was too big to appeal to punters, and they found it difficult to make a favr ourite. Banner Boy, Coupling, High Speed, Valuator, and Poor Boy, in that order, were the best backed. Miss Redowa began very smartly, and led along the back from Some Queen, Valuator, and Banner Boy, and this also Was the order across the .top. ( Turning into the straight Miss Redowa was still in charge, but ran a little wide, Some Queen and Banner Boy following spit. This let Valuator through on the rails, and opposite the grand stand he looked a certain winner. Then High Speed put in a great run, and finishing much the faster beat Valuator by a very narrow margin. Poor Boy was_ nearly a length away third, with Remindful and Sentinel Lad next.

Only Gieseler’s pair. Money Mine and Caniisader, wore withdrawn from the Invercargill Cup, leaving a good-condi-tioned field of ten, of winch Celerity 11. was made a hot favourite, being more than twice as well backed as Wingatui or Glare, who were next in demand, with Royal Saxon, Latin Quarter, and Queen Balboa the best backed of the

others. Royal Saxon was the first to find his feet, and Jed through the straight From Queen Balboa, Wingatui. and Latin Quarter. Going past the mile post Wingatui had taken charge from Royal Saxon, Latin Quarter, and. Queen Balboa, Glare and the favourite lying last. Then Tcheka began to move up, and passing the six-furlong post the leaders were Wingatui, Tcheka, Royal Saxon, and Latin Quarter, with the favourite still last. At the far turn Wingatui and Tcheka were still in charge, with Latin Quarter, Black Duke, and Glare in attendance. Racing across the top Wingatui retired, and Latin Quarter and Glare were in charge approaching the straight, where the favourite made a forward move. Jufttm Quarter led! Glare, Tcheka, Black Duke, Royal Saxon, Taboo, and Night Lad into the straight, _ and then Glare put in a great fun which landed him a winner by nearly two lengths from Night Lad, who finished very well, and Latin Quarter a short half-length ofr third. Tcheka was next, and then followed Taboo, Roval Saxon, Queen Balboa, Wingatui, Celerity 11., and Black Duke last. • * • ♦ Only Princess Pointer was withdrawn, from the Oreti Harness Trot, and the bracket Erin Chimes and Suncross was made a better favourite than Satin. King.’ these two chances being much better backed than Red Chimes, Captain Wrack, or Free Chimes. Suncross, Satin King, and Ellegro lost their chances at tho start. Thrift began tho best of the limit horses, and led Toby Tvllum. Sunfire. and . Erin’s Advance passing the stand. Going into the hack stretch Thrift was in front of Brins Advance. Evening Sun, Sunfire. and Rco Chimes. Thrift led Erin’s Advance round the far turn, with Reo l Chimes and Evening Sun lying next. There wau no change in the remainder of the race. Thrift staying on to win bv a length and a-half from Erin» Advance Sunfire was a length away third, and Satin King, Suncross. and Nelbar came next. . . • • ■Salmo Salar, Academy, and Lucky. Maid were withdrawn from, the Waikiwi Hack Handicap, and on the goad form she showed at Wyndham Impertinence was backed down to nearly an, even money chance, with Abbeville and Dumblano the only others whll fancied. Cetchela got the best of an uneven, start, and led alopg the back from Abbeville, Jock o’ Hazeldean, Battle Maid, and Impertinence. . There was no change in the leading division until three furlongs from home,-when Abbeville and Cetchela were just clear of the favourite and Jock ”o’ Hazeldean. Abbeville led Impertinence into the straight, and then the latter drew away to win easily by a short length. Jock o’ Hazeldean was two lengths away third, followed by Battle Maid, Dumblane, and Flying Binge. * * *x *

Taboo was the only withdrawal from the Waihopai Handicap, for which Lucky Light was., installed a warm, favourite, with Sparkling Eyes and Camisador the only others heavily supported. From an even start Gold Tinge shot away to the front, and led! Lucky Light and Sparkling Eyes into the back stretch. Passing the sis furlong post Gold Tinge was three lengths clear of Lucky Light, with Red Sea, Money Order,' and Sparkling Eyes next. Gold Tinge was still in charge rounding the far turn, where Red Sea had run up to Lucky Light, who a little later dropped back last. Gold Tinge led Red Sea, Camisader, and Sparkling Eyes across the top, but at the turn into the straight Camisader shot upland led straight Camisader shot-up, and led\ Eed Sea and Red Racer. • Camisader came on to win well by nearly two lentghs from Red Racer,- who beat Money Mine by a length.
