Bertha Clcavenger (forty-three) won a judgment of £90,000, which is the largest ever awarded in an American breach of promise action. In 1917 she arrived from the country and started a rooming house business. John Henry Castle, one of her boarders, worked in the Ford factory for £1 a day. When they became engaged the gfrl loaned Castle £2OO to start him in a real estate business, his partner being Mr Henry Ford’s brother. They made a fortune of £1,000,000, and two years ago Castle notified her that he had married someone else. The trial lasted sis weeks.
