AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS

UNFAIR TREATMENT DENIED [Pee United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 20. With reference to the cable message from Sydney the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association denies that any unfairness has been shown to Ryan and Griffiths. The itinerary was arranged before the arrival of the swimmers in New Zealand, and was arranged on the assumption that they were lit. Griffiths proved to be so, but Ryan was off colour, a fact that could not be foreseen in New Zealand. The tour was started in Auckland, not because the New Zealand Association was anxious that Ryan should meet Bridson at the start of the tour, but because’ climatic con- 1 siderations made it Essential that a start should be made in the warmer waters of the north. The Auckland Centre arranged a quarter-mile race on the first night and a furlong race on the second, but the furlong was changed to half "a mile at Ryan’s own request. The'cable referred to read; At the council meeting of the New South Wales Swimming Association a letter was received from the Manly Club protesting against the swimmer Ryan being matched against Bridson at Auckland the day after ho left the boat, especially when he had been very .sick. A motion that the Australian Swirarning Union be censured for failing to prevent unfair treatment being meted out to Ryan and Griffiths in New Zealand was carried unanimously. .
