ARGENTINE EXPERIMENTS A record non-stop run of 800 miles was recently made by a Diesel-electric rail car hauling 100 tons, on the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway. Referring to the achievement at the annual meeting of the company in London, the Chairman, Mr H. C. Allen, said the management had initiated experiments with- Diesel power plants, the aim . being to develop a more economical and efficient form of railway traction than that provided by the ordinary steam locomotive. Tho company’s efforts had been directed to the design and construction of .three separate units; first, a Diesel rail car to deal with branch line traffic where only light trains were called for; secondly, a Diesel shunting engine; and, thirdly, a Diesel electric train, to enable the eisting intensive suburban traffic to be handled with greater speed and facility. The experiments conducted so far had proved encouraging.
