SECOND IN COMMAND
THE CASE OF RICHARD BROPHY " FAKE " SUICIDE ALLEGED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, December 3. (Received December 4, at 1 p.m.) Mr Richard Brophy, formerly second in command of the Byrd expedition, staged a “ fako ” suicide at Coney Island last August, with the object of getting out or sight. He succeeded until an editor from Omaha, who had been looking over a Byrd expedition picture last week, recognised a man working on his staff as Brophy. Upon the discovery Brophy agreed to return to his sick wife in New York, but overnight he again disappeared. it was alleged that his friendship with a Broadway actress caused complications with Commander Byrd, and led to his dismissal in Dunedin.
