MANCHESTER UNITY

The Loyal United Juvenile Lodge, M. met in the M.U. Hall, Stuart street, on Monday evening, when there was a largo attendance of members and visiting brethren, the N. Bro. R. Hall, presiding. The principal business was the half-yearly election and installation of officers. The president (Bro. G. Irving) and members of the Juvenile Council, and the P.G.M., Bro. P. Young, were present, and a number of adult brethren from the city lodges also attended. The election of officers was keenly contested, and resulted as follows;—N.G., Bro. R. Borne; V.G., Bro. L. James; E.S., Bro. H. Huntley; warden, Bro. J. Henderson; guardian, Bro. R. Lomas; conductor, Bro. P. Holland. The installation was conducted by the presiI dent of the council, assisted by the adult brethren. The newly-installed officers were honoured with the Oddfellows’ toast, and suitably responded. The president later addressed the meeting, and congratulated the lodge on its steady progress, since its inception, I stating that the set of officers elected that, evening would ensure its further progress. P.P.G.M. Bro. Clark made appropriate reference to the fact that the first president of the Juvenile Council (Bro. Irving) was a product of a juvenile lodge, and in the future some boy would have the honour of being the first district officer’ from the ranks of the juveniles. The P.G.M., Bro. P. Young, also extended congratulations to the newly-installed officers -and the lodge on behalf of the District Executive, and advocated the formation of more juvenile branches, controlled by the various adult lodges. The P.G.M. referred to the progress of the juvenile movement in England, now conducted on similar lines to their own, and stated that the latest returns from the Homeland showed a gain in membership of over 6,000 for the year. The visitors’ toast was responded to by the Loyal Caversham and Prince of Wales Juvenile Lodges, the president, of the latter lodge (Bro. Jack-) extending an invitation to members to be*present at the installation of officers at Port Chalmers on Wednesday. At the conclusion of the lodge meeting the Adult Management Committee met to consider several matters, and it was decided to hold tho election of officebearers next lodge night. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge was well attended, the N.G., Bro. Simpson, presiding. The lodge opened in mourning, one of its oldest members, P.G. Bro. James Toner, late of Waitahuna, having passed away at Rangiora. Sympathetic reference was made to the late brother, and a motion of condolence was carried. Correspondence included the district statement of accounts for the half-year, which was passed for payment. Tho nomination of officers was opened and adjourned, the election to , be held on December 17. During the meeting one proposition for membership was received.

There was a large attendance of members at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge, held in the M.U. Hall on Tuesday evening. The N.G. Bro. H. Pithie presided. A letter was received from the secretary of the Loyal Westport Lodge re members on the funds, and extending fraternal greetings from the Westland District. Nominations for the various chairs were opened, the installation to be held next lodge night. The action of the trustees regarding the granting

of assistance to the widow of a deceased member was approved, and it was decided to forward letters of thanks to P.G. Bro. G. Crosby (Loyal Dunedin), and the P.G.M., Bro. P. Young, for their efforts in making inquiries into this matter. The lodge was founded on December 5, 1848, and this, being tho nearest meeting to that date, the anniversary was celebrated in the customary manner by entertaining the members of tbe juvenile lodges, a fair number of whom were welcomed by the N.G. Shooting and quoits competitions were staged for the boys, the following proving prize winners: —Shooting: Bro. E. Carruthers 1, Mason 2, M‘Al- - 3. Quoits; Bro. James I, Henderson 2, F. Carruthers 3. The boys later, did justice to a bountiful supper, after which the N.G. of the juveniles, Bro. Borric. returned thanks on behalf of his lodge. The final meeting of tho Official Handbook Committee for the year was held bn Tuesday evening, the P.G.M., Bro. P. Young, in the chair. A number of lodges have expressed appreciation of the committee’s work, this year’s handbook maintaining the high standard of previous issues. A hearty vote of thanks was accorder the editor (P.P.G.M. Bro.. J Robson) and the secretary (P.P.G.M. Bro. B. H. Rosevear) for their services. In accordance with a resolution passed at the half-yearly district meeting in September, the District Executive will visit the Loyal Valley Lodge on Monday, December 9, for the purpose of suitably recognising the valuable services of P.G. Bro. AV, Hutton, who for many years capably filled the position of editor of the official handbook, and it is expected there will be a large gathering of members of the order on that occasion to do honour to Bro. Hutton. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Dunedin Lodge was held in the M.U, Hall, Stuart street, on Thursday evening, the N.G., Bro. B. H. Haugh, presiding over a good muster of members and visiting brethren. An invitation was received from the Loyal Valley Lodge to attend its next meeting ora December 9, -when it is proposed to do honour to P.G. Bro. AV, Hutton, late editor of the official handbook. The lodge was adjourned to carry out an evening by tbe “ elective officers.’ This took the form of a progressive euchre tournament, the winners being: First,. Bro. Stewart; .second, Bro. M’DougaJl;' third, Bro. Esquilant. An excellent supper' was provided, and everyone present spent an enjoyable evening.
