Fireblight has now appeared in many orchards in Masterton, and is reported also in some other parts of the Wnirarapa. district. The Government Orchard Instructor is operating in this district with an assistant, and is now' compiling a register of all the properties in the Wairarapa fireblight area on which any hawthorn is growing. As soon as this register has been completed an official inspection will be made of all orchards, and if necessary the compulsory and the penal powers relating to the cutting out of diseased growth, particularly fireblight cankers, will bo enforced. As far as can be ascertained the owners of orchards are very willingly carrying out the advice of the Government experts in regard to cutting out and destroying the portions of their trees stricken with fireblight. In Greytown, where fireblight lias been appearing for some years past, its ravages have been confined within narrow limits by the prompt catting out of diseased growth.
