The Newcastle-on-Tyne ' Guardians have decided to cancel a debt of £45,000 incurred since 1921 by granting relief on loan. The clerk said that out of 25,000 notices sent to those concerned more than 5,000 were returned as “ not, known.” . “ What’s the first thing you do when cleaning your rifle?” the sergeant demanded. “ Look at tho - number,”' said the newcomer, “ Oh,” said the sergeant, “and what’s the big idea?” “To make sure I don’t clean someone elso’s.”
