Messrs L. Deans Ritchie and Douglas W. Spedding returned from Wellington yesterdays after attending the annual meeting of the Ileal Estate Institute of New Zealand. Mr Spedding was elected 'as one of tho vice-presidents and Mr Ritchie, the past president, was re-elected to the executive. A Melbourne cable states that Lord. Somers (Governor of Victoria) and Lady Somers, who have been on a private visit to Great Britain, returned yesterday, Sir Harold S. Cantrell, of the Bank’ of New Zealand staff, Dunedin, who ha* received advice of his promotion to the position of accountant at the Apia (Samoa) branch of the bank, went north by yesterday’s express to connect with the Tofua, leaving Auckland on Saturday. Mr Cantrell was a prominent and active member of the Carisbrook Cricket Club, and also an enthusiastic golfer. He is a native of Dunedin, and was educated at the Otago Boys’ High. School.
The death is announced of Mr Bennet P. Lethbridge, aged sixty-two, of “Anubank,” Turakina, an ex-chairman of the Wanganui Hospital Board and the Rangitikci County Council. The death has occurred of Mr John Moore Johnston, secretary of the Manawatu Racing Club, treasurer of the A. and P. Association, and a, member of the council of the Royal Agricultural Society. He was sevonty-ona years old.—Press Association.
A Pahiatua Association message announces the death of Mr Thomas Bell, aged ninety. The Bell family Jived alone on -“Sunday Island, in the Kermadec Group, for ten years. Mr Bell for a Jong time urged a claim with tin* Now Zealand Government for the freehold of the land. He had an interesting career in the South Seas. One daughter, Airs Galderd, resides at Pahiatua.
A Press Association telegram announces the death of Mr Cressie Graham Wightman, secretary of the, Timaru Harbour Board, after a short illness.
Mr W. Banwoll left Dunedin yesterday en route to Auckland, where he is to join the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. An Association message from Ashbmv ton states that Mrs Sarah Trezise celebrated her hundredth birthday to-day.-Born at Croydon (England), she married Mr Alfred Blackburn in 1854, coming with him to Now Zealand in 1863 in the ship Metropolis. Mr Blackburn died in 1906, and in 1908 the widow, married Mr John Trezise, who died two years later. Mrs Trezise has two daughters— Mrs T. E. Barnard, of Sydney, and Mrs Ritchie—and three sons —Mr A. H. Blackburn (of Devouport, Auckland), Mr B. Blackburn (Wellington) , and Mr C. Blackburn (Gisborne).There are seventeen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Mrs Trezise has retained all her faculties* and takes a keen interest in affairs.
A. Hastings Press Association telegram states that Mr Matthew Johnson,; deputy-mayor, died yesterday, aged 61, lie had been a resident of the district for close on forty years. Grand Hotel guests include Miss M* Holroyd (Yorkshire, England), Mr A. L, Kennedy (London), Mr H. Townend (Sydney), Sir H. A. Le Pino (Wellington), Mr D. C. Turnbull (Tixuaru), Mr and Mrs G. W. Anderson, Mr and Mrs W. E. Mitchell (Invercargill). Among those slaying at the Excelsior Hotel are Mr C. Diamond (Perth). Miss J. B. Ail-ken (Afastorton), Mr S. F, Marshall (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs J. L. Matheson. Miss M. Gee (Gore), Mrs J. Guest (Balchitlia), Mr W. Hogg (Invercargill). Recent arrivals at the City Hotel include Mr and Airs B. Pomeroy (Sydney), Dr P. Marshall, Air S. Duff (Wellington), the Rev. Air Anderson, Mrs Anderson (Christchurch). Mesdanies J. A. O’Kane and W. Duncan,Miss Brown (Alexandra), Air T.
