FELL IN WAR
FAMOUS FRENCH HAMLETS ■ PARIS; October 10. The Council-General of the Meuse Department, calling attention to the fact that villages, like men, fell in the war, has ordered a marble tablet to be inscribed with the names of Beaumont, Besnevaux, Combres, Douanmont, Floury Devant, Haumoncs, Samogncux, Lonvemont, Ormcs, and Vaudevant, all of which were destroyed beyond hope of rebuilding. Another village was Villers-Carbon-nell, known to everyone who was at Peronne. When the to ended, the only trace of it was a notice board, in English: “This was Villers- Carbonnell. It has now been reconstructed and is flourishing, with a population of 400.”
