BYRD EXPEDITION
THE SLEDGING PARTY A TOILSOME JOURNEY Special to Press Association from the Byrd Expedition by Russell Owen. (Copyright.) BAY OP WHALES, October 27. The members of the supporting sledging party reported last night by radio that they wore 137 *miles from the base, having made seventeen miles on Saturday. The lost few days have been much colder in the interior of the barrier, but clear weather and a warmer sun are slowly raising the temperature. The sun is new above the horizon for the entire twenty-four hours. A message last night from Deganahl, the navigator of the party, said the hardest of the hauling was over. There were three very cold days, but tbey found things better after they had dropped their loads at depot No. 2. There was one badly-crcvassed area between them and their goal A glimpse of a. haycocked region sixty miles away was seen in a mirage yesterday. Now, as the weather has moderated, the men and dogs arc at their best, and the meals are the happiest times. In one pot wo have cooked pemmican, bacon, dried soup, dried milk, cheese peanut butter, hardtack, and dried beef.
