C. EASTWOOD'S “HAT TRICK”

[Special to the ‘ Star. - ] CHRISTCHURCH, October 28. Malmsey brought up the rear of the small field in the Raugiora Cup until half a mile from home. Here she began to retrieve her position, and once in the straight shot past the others, winning easily from Chiekwheat, who had made most of the pace. Amor and Haze were scratched, the former having met with a slight mishap on the way to the course. Count Cavour was favourite in a good betting race. Sea Raid and Chiekwheat made the pace to the straight, where Sea Raid retired. Malmsey then moved up, and won by over a length. Chiekwheat hung on long enough to beat Count Cavour by a bead. The cup, which accompanies the stake, was presented to J- B. Pearson, owner of Malmsey. C. Eastwood has a great riding record in the Rangiora Cup. Ho w'on on Front Rank two years ago, and on Hoylake last year, completing the hat trick bv piloting Malmsey to-day.
