WELLINGTON MEETING

the race in hand, but fifty yards from the post Count Palatine put iu an appearance, and executing some remarkable work got up in the last stride to cut down Austerity by a head margin. Lucky Light was a length away, with Royal Opera, Make Up, and Tigrano in close attendance. Llyn Dim and Royal Black headed the remainder. The winner is a three-year-old gelding by'Paladin from Martarmns dam per Arma, and is the makings of a high-class performer. Lucky Light was always prominent, and steered a straighter course than on Saturday, but failed at the business end. • * * • The two-year-old form to date was substantially borne out in the Roseneath Handicap, Gesture recording a convincing win from the Auckland winner Chief Link. She was one of the leaders from the start, and, pccupying an outside berth, was close in behind Green Linnet at the entrance to the course proper, with Chief Link and Princess Betty near at hand. Once headed for the post Gesture went away from the field to heat Chief Link by two lengths, with Green Linnet three lengths back in front of Princess Betty, Nimble, Arajean, Simbn, Sporting Chance, and Joie dc Val._ Nothing had a chance with the winner over the last furlong, tho only one to keep her at all moving being Chief Link, who had a hard task in conceding her 161 b. Siniba was well back early, but was up near the front at the false rail, only to fade out again in the run borne. • » • • A great race was witnessed in the Pearce Handicap, the pool for which totalled over £II,OOO, Reremoana carried more than Panther and Black Duke. Panther was in charge alter the field settled down, and Jed across the top from Stanchion, Reremoana, Night Lad, Merry Mint, and Black Duke. There was little change in the leading division entering the straight, Panther still holding command, but was tackled by Black Duke inside the distance. The latter had him beaten 100yds from the post, and was proclaimed the winner, but his supporters had an anxious moment when Paitonu asserted himself from the middle of the field, and Black Duke had to be ridden right out to beat him by a neck. Panther was onlv a head away, with another short margin to Reremoana, and then came Atholspear, Merrv Mint, Great Charter, True Blood, Full Mark, Yoma, and First Acre. . , Black Duke drew the inside berth, and only vigorous horsemanship kept him out of trouble. He bad a good passage thereafter, and finished on in a. clogged manner. His rider, H. Gray, received a great ovation from the nowd on returning to the scale. Paitonu showed marked improvement, and better placed in the middle stages ma> have given the winner more trouble. Panther ran a genuine race, and looks likely to do well this season. Reremoana executed a solid effort, and was in tho picture throughout. Night Lad again showed prominence for a good portion of the journey, but faded right out when headed for home. « * * • The Harcouit Cup attracted ,a record field as far as numbers went, while good-class form was well ’represented. Tn another big pool Pink Coat was mad© a better favourite than Eaglet, while there was a lot of money for Hunting Cry (ridden by Gray). From a fair start Admiral Drake, Speed Light, and Eaglet were the first to show out, but entering the back stretch Pink Coat rushed to the front, and was four lengths ■ilcar of Speed Light, Eaglet, Commendation, Admiral Drake, Hunting Cry, Concentrate, and Verti gern nt the end of four furlongs. Pink Coat had increased his lead to eight lengths at the far turn, his nearest pursuers being Eaglet. Speed Light, Hunting Cry, and Concentrate, with Hoylake last. The field reduced the gap rounding the home turn, but Pink Coat was still clear entering the straight From Eaglet, Commendation, Hunting Cry, Concentrate., Vertigern, and Silver Paper. At one stage of the run home it looked as if Pink Coat would be collared, but be went away again inside the distance and recorded a decisive win by two lengths from Seatown. who was not observed until the last furlong was entered upon. Concentrate was loss than a length away next, with another length to Eaglet, who was followed by Commendation, Hunting Cry, Silver Paper, Hoylake, Kick Off, Vertigern, and Speed Light. The winner proved himself a class above the opposition, but unfortunately was very lame on pulling up, and some time elapsed before be got back to the birdcage. The trouble, is in the pastern joint, which he injured after the Grand National Meeting. Eaglet met with trouble at the end of two furlongs, and was momentarily sent back, but she made up her ground again in the hack stretch. Except for Ibis she may have been second, but had no chance with the winner. Concern trate ran a great race, and can be marked off as a distinct New Zealand Cup proposition. Silver Paper, going out of the straight, was sent back to.a rear position. He moved up gradually rounding the far turn, and looked dangerous entering the straight, but failed to go on. Hoylake was also badly treated early, and was squeezed back to last place shortly after .the start, a position he occupied until the home turn.

The Rona Hurdle Handicap provided a decisive win for Brigadier Bill, who, ridden a different race to that on Saturday, jumped better and had the field well beaten for pace. After leading, for half a mile he was steadied, and followed Midern, Tresham, and Novar into the straight. He jumped to the front at the last fence, and went on to beat Novar by two lengths. Tresham was a neck away, a head in front of Modern, with Ivapuna, Askari, and Beaumont next. Brigadier Bill showed a big .improvement on his first day’s form. Kapuiia, who was solidly supported, did not show promise at any part of the journey. False Scent, who was narrowly beaten at Avondale by Eaglet, was rated the best of propositions for the Spring Trial Stakes, and he carried well over a quarter of the machine total, but he gave a very poor display and never once justified his support. After . the field had gone a furlong, Yali, Footpad, Rasouli, Irnateagirl, and Arrowhead formed the leading division, and as the straight was reached Footpad was slightly in advance of Rasouli, Vaii, Arrowhead, Roundelay, and Irnateagirl. The leaders retired at the distance, and an exciting tussle ensued between Vaii, Roundelay, and Irnateagirl, the first named beating Roundelay by half a length, with Irnateagirl a similar distance away, Habit and Air Laddie being close up, followed by Arrowhead, Emotion, Duellona, and Rasouli. The last named was ridden by H, Gray, who received an enthusiastic reception as he appeared in the birdcage.

Cimabue was a warm order for the N'ainai Handicap, _ and ho carried his followers through in a convincing stylo. Ho was the first to enter the course proper from Consent, First Money, Francolin, Gold Cure, and Aspiring, and without being seriously challenged crossed the line with half a length to spare from First Money, who was a like distance in front of Arrow I.ad Gold Cure was close up next, and then <-ame White Fang, Silver Mine, Keddar, Aspiring, and Consent. The winner’s task was easy, although First Money kept him busy at the finish. Arrow Lad has improved on the races he has had at the meeting, and will be dangerous for the Stewards’ Handicap. Both Aspiring and Francoliu failed to. gee out the journey.

The public were correct in their judgment in making Count Palatine favourite for the Tourua Handicap, but their prospects of collecting did did not look hopeful until the last few strides. ‘‘Then the field settled down Royal Opera and Lucky Light were together in front of Tigrano. Make Up, Austerity, My Own, and Tourist, and entering the straight the two first named still had charge from Mount Shannon, Make Up, Austerity, ana Llyn Dhu, with the favourite well back. ‘ Austerity shot to the front inside the distance and appeared to have

A record sum was handled In the concluding event, tho Ruahine Haiidi cap, Richfield being an outstanding favourite. Royal Parade was the first to enter the straight from Dancing Star, Coon Song, Clarendon, and Richfield, and an exciting race home ensued. Royal Parade looked a winner 100yds off the post, but Richfield finished with a rattle and beat him by a length. Clarendon was a moderate third, with Limosin next, followed fcy Juggle, Werata, Auda, Phastar, and Coon Song.
