TROUBLE ON STEAMER
CARGO HOT WORKED The London steamer Lawbeath, which arrived at Port Chalmers this morning from Lyttelton where sho was delayed for a fortnight owing to trouble with the crew, was delayed again to-day as tho aftermath of the trouble at Lyttelton. The trouble at Lyttelton was owing to tho European deck hands and the Lascar linemen declining to continue at work unless they received the wages and conditions ruling in New Zealand. They were bi'ought to court and' convicted on a charge of impeding the ship, and were sentenced to a month’s imprisonment, with the proviso that they would be liberated when prepared to resume work ou the old conditions The Lascars and two Europeans capita lated and returned to work after two oi three days in the “ cooler.” Thrw men refused to resume work, and sea men were shipped in their place at Lyt telton. Evidently those men were not mem bers of the Seamen’s Union; hence the trouble with the waterside workers today at Port Chalmers. They did not start to discharge the cargo of 4,000 tons of Nauru phosphatn the vessel has on board for this port. It is understood that tho position has been referred to tho union headquarters in Wellington. ;
