YESTERDAY’S PARLIAMENT
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL (Abridged from Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 24. The Legislative Council met at 2.3 U p.m. Sir Robert Stout moved for a return showing the amount per financial year for the past three years of the common fund in the Public Trust Office, the amount for each such year paid to the beneficiaries or the owners for interest in the common fund, the amount of interest earned by the office for lending tho moneys in the common fund, and the profits earned by the office. He contended that it was unfair for the Public Trust Office to make a profit out of an estate beyond charging the actual expenses.—The Leader of the Council (the Hon. T. K. Sidey) objected to tho motion on the ground that it would entail a large expense in the preparation of the return. It would be more fitting, he said, if the motion were brought up in the House, which hau the responsibility of the voting of the money tor the maintenance and administration of the Public Trust Office.—The moton was defeated by 19 to 10. On the second reading of the Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks Amendment Bill Sir Francis Bell objected to the proposed change in the title of the -registrar and deputy-registrar of patents to commissioner and deputy-commis-sioner respectively, on the ground that there was no cause for it.—This was upheld by Messrs V. H. Reed, T. S. Weston, J. A. Uanan, and L. M. isitt.— Tho Han. T. K. Sidey said he looked on the alteration as quite unimportant, and if it was really objected to ho felt sure it would not be insisted on.—The Bill was read a second time and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. Eikihauda said, on behalf of the Roman Catholic Natives, he left it to the Council to decide whether the Bill was a good measure for the people of New Zealand, He did not want to see evil come of it.—The debate was still further adjourned, and the Council rose at 4.30 p.m.
