PROPOSED RAILWAY SIDING REFUSED
A proposal by the A. and P. Society that the railway siding to its ground at Tahuna Park should pass through East Park, situated on the left-hand side of the road hading to tho tit. Kilda Heart, was strongly opposed by members of the Ocean Beach Domain Board at its meeting yesterday, Mr J. H Hancock was in the chair, and other members present were Messrs J. S. Douglas, J. Wilson, H. L. Tapley, J. B. Shacklqck and E. Longworth. The Chairman said that Mr Longwor.tli and he met a deputation from the A. and P. Society, which was represented by Messrs H. C. Campbell and G. F. Duthio, at Tahuna Park on October 8. The society had a proposal to submit under which the present railway" siding should be extended by taking it through East Park on the lefthand side of the road leading to the St. Kilda Beach and into the back of Tahuna Park. Mr Hancock added that the Domain Board had always been willing to assist the A. and P. Society, but he had told its representatives that the board could not agree to the proposal. That was how tho matter stood. “We have been thirty years erecting a public pleasure park for the people of St. Kilda, and have spent a good deal of money,” declared Mr Hancock, “ and we are not going to give away the rights of the people for all time. We would be glad to assist the A. and P, Society, as we have always assisted them, but we would not agree to a heavy goods train going into the park, turning beyond the park where the people go, and back again. There are other ways of getting there ” Members of the board expressed agreement with Mr Hancock’s sentiments. It is understood the society is presenting a further plan regarding another inlet to the park.
