AT THE ALTAR
THE MODERN BRIDE OBJECTS TO BE GIVEN AWAY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, October 21. Yet another example of the English girl’s wholesale bid for independence is the movement j against the timehonoured regulation that she must bo led up to the altar and given away. Scores of advocates argue that the bride arranges everything herself nowadays, from the securing of a husband to the fixing of the wedding day. The Countess of Westmoreland, who is one of the leaders, says that the custom does not conform with the modern scheme of things. Modern girls do not bother even to ask their parents whether they can marry, and they are too high-spirited and self-reliant to be given away -by anybody.—Australian Press Association.
