ST. CLAIR LIFE-SAVING CLUB

AH ACTIVE YEAR The annual meeting of the St.' Clair Life Saving Chib was belt] at the club’s pavilion at St. Clair last night, Mr H. H. Henderson presiding over an attendance of twenty-live members. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the Chairman stated .that one of the events of the year had beeif the visit of the New Zealand champion, W. Cameron, the club holding a very fine carnival on this occasion. Despite a loss of £4 Is 3d, this carnival had been well worth while. Five lives had been saved by members of the chib during the year, which was a record for the club, and showed that it was serving a most useful purpose. On Sundays and holi days the vigilance of members on the beach was always well maintained. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £9 18s lOd. and the assets amounted to £ll7 8s lOd. Mr Priest, seconded the motion, and congratulated swimmers on their success during the year. Most important was the fact that members had been instrumental in saving lives on the beach.

Mr M'lndoe also spoke to the report, and referred to the successful season. He expressed pleasure at tho attendance of young members, to whom the club must look in the very near future. The work of the club was of great public benefit, and primarily it was a life saving club.

The election of office-bearers resulted;—Patron. Hon. W. B. Taverner; president. Mr H Ed. Henderson; vice-presidents- Messrs P. J. Priest. J. Rogerson, E. L. Macassey. J. L. M'lndoe, and T. Sagar; chib captain. Mr A. Harrod; deputy-captain.. Mr J. Swan; secretary, Mr A. Gorrie: instructor, Mr V. Fletcher: committee — Messrs R. Wilson. H. Devlin, J. Faulks, J. Crowley, J. Lewis, Bailey, and T. Cole; auditor, Mr J. Rogerson; delegates to Otago Centre, Messrs J. Lewis and A. Harrod; Selection Committee —Messrs J. L. M'lndoe, V. Fletcher, and A. Harrod; hon. medical officers, Drs Murray and Anderson. It was decided to apply for Monday night (8.45 to 9.45) ns the club hour at the Municipal Baths, and that the opening night be the Monday after Labour Day. The Chairman referred to the question of active members attending a certain number of compulsory drills. Mr Fletcher explained the method of practice in the Maranni Club (Wellington). and a recommendation to_t.be committee was carried that it consider the question of compulsory drills for members Tim Chairman stressed the desirability of forming classes for instruction in life-saving, and said he wan'd h’ke to see instructors offering _to take Hasses at the baths for examination for proR cHncy certificates and bronze medallions.
