(Received October 23, at 11.30 a.m.) The King has approved of the appointment of General Sir Philip Chet«odo to bo Commander-in-Chief in India in succession to Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwod, With His Majesty’s approval the Secretary for India has invited Sir William Birdwood, who will complete his five years’ appointment on August 5, 1930, to serve a further period of three months from that date. [General Sir Philip Chetwodo is sixty years of age. Ho entered the Army in 1889, and has seen much active "service. He fought in the South African campaign, and in the Great War ho commanded in turn the sth Cavalry Brigade, the 2nd Cavalry Division ' (promoted major-general for distinguished service), the Desert Corps in Egypt, and the 20th Army Corps. Ho took pan in tho campaign in Palestine and the capture of Jerusalem. He was mentioned in despatches eleven times. Since 1928 he has been- Chief of the General Staff in India.]
