SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY

Art echo of the disaster to tho steamer Penguin was heard at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand, which was in receipt of a letter from the_ town clerk, enclosing a communication sent to him by the mayor of Wellington relative to a claim by Mrs Hannam against tho Penguin relief fund, of which it was understood the society had received the balance. Mr C 4. L. Denniston presided over the meeting A letter enclosed by the mayor of Wellington was From Mr W. J. Jordan, M.P., who said that he had been approached by Mrs Hannam, Onehunga, asking whether money was available from the Penguin relief fund, as Mrs Hannam was the sole woman survivor of the wreck, and was now in financial straits. Mrs Hannam’s husband and children were drowned, another child being born shortly after the disaster, and now being twenty years of age. The secretary (Mr Ei S. Wilson) was instructed to inquire into the matteand report to a rub-eommittcc. The Secretaiy of the British Sailors’ Society wrote acknowledging receipt of a cheque for £SO, representing a grant made to the funds of the society by the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand. He was instructed to convey tho wannest thanks of the directors and also to convey their sincere sympathy on hearing of the lamented death of Mr C. W. S. Chamberlain.
