W. B. Taverner (Minister of Railways and Customs) arrived by the express from the north on Saturday afternoon. In the evening he attended the annual meeting of the Pacific StarnBowkett Society, and was subsequently present at a social gathering held by the Railway Locomotive Ambulance Division in the Hillside Workshops social hall. The Minister left for Wellington this morning. The Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) visited Hamilton on Saturday and opened the new swimming pool at the Matangi School. The Minister then went on to Morrinsville to inspect the schools there. • His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy will return from the north this evening. Mr Tomlinson, a senior assistant at Wellington College, has been appointed principal of the Wairarapa High School in succession to Dr G. H. K A Karaka, of Morrinsville, was installed as canon at St. Peter’s Cathedral. Bishop Bennett preached* the sermon to a large congregation of Maoris and pakehas. Sister Puilar, on the staff ol Greytown Hospital, while in Dunedin on holiday, had the misfortune to break her ankle, and is in Dunedin Hospital. Two deaths occurred in Cromwell district on Saturday morning, both victims being comparatively young men, well known and highly respected members of the community. One was Mr E. Holloway, runholder, of Cairnmuir run, near Cromwell. He had been m failing health for some time from an affliction said to be duo to service in the recent war. He is survived by his wife and two young children. The other was Mr Fred Ball, junior, the sou of two well-known residents near Lowburn. He was also engaged on the land, and his end came with dramatic suddenness. When to nil outward appearance in good health, his admission to Cromwell Hospital was suddenly found necessary early this week for appendicitis, and unfortunately other pomplications set in and he passed away three days later. He Was a single man, thirty years of age, and one of the district's * most popular young men.— Cromwell correspondent. Mrs M. Case (New York), Messrs H. Townsend and G. E. Bunting (Sydney) , P. A. Herman (Auckland), Robert King, W. M. Luke, H. Walls, Ben Bayliss, and J Lankind (Wellington), J. R. Leggo 'Neb-on), J. ClaHc-son-Dodds (Christchurch), and J. R. Wilson (Tawanui) are staying at the Grand Hotel. New visitors to the Excelsior Hotel include Messrs Lincoln (Auckland), J. S. Kimbec, G. D. Little, and J. L. Knutson (Wellingon), F. W. Lee (Palmerston North), Misses K. Stewart and B. Blake (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Jowsev (Timarn), Mrs C. E. Hannah, Miss J. E. Bell (Invercargill).
