A RICHARD BARTHELMESS TALKIE Richard Barihelmcss is now'heard as well a* seen The star of two-score features, famed for his ''Broken Blossoms.' Ins ‘ Tol’able David,’ is now being heard for the first time in ‘ Weary River,’ his newest First National feature coming to the Empire Theatre next Friday. In ‘ Weary River ’ Barthclniess not only talks, but plays the piano. A Vitaphone test proved his voice of excellent quality for talking pictures, and advance notices predict unprecedented success for the initial Barthelmess talkie. ■ 4 Weary River ’ is from the short story by Courtney Ryley Cooper, adapted to the screen by Bradley King and directed by Frank Lloyd. It relates the story of convict who sings over the radio, wins a parole, becomes famous, and wins the love of a girl. It is a wide departure from anything Barthelmess has done heretofore, and offers' him the sort of human characterisation in which he excels. The cast supporting Barthelmess is headed by Betty Compsou, who recently played the feminine lead in Barthelmess’s ‘Scarlet Seas.’ Others in'the cast include William Holden, Raymond Turner, George Stone, Louis Natheaux, Robert O’Connor, and others.
