V.A.T.C. MEETING

GUP WINNER’S COURSE RECORD MELBOURNE, October 20. There was fine weather and an enormous attendance at the final day of the Victoria Amateur fTurf Club’s Meeting at Caulfield, a i few New Zealanders being present. Gudroon led always in the Oby Hurdles, and won comfortably. He failed badly on Wednesday. His trainer, J. H. Davies, also has Versatile. First Legion had a comfortable victory 1 in the Nursery. He has two wins and a fourth from three starts. Namera, the hero of many steeplechase battles, was last early in thejrace, but finished well, and won the Wyuna Steeples in the last stride. He won the National in 1928, and was also second and third in that race in"earlier seasons. There was tremendous interest in the Cup. High Syce was never further back than seventh, took third place at the turn, and won brilliantly. Amounis came home fast, but was no match for the winner. Prince Viol had every chance. The winner is owned by Mrs Buxton, the first lady to capture the race since 1894. The trainer (Holt) and the jockey (Duncan) won last year with Maple. This is High Syce’s third successive win this season. The winner comes from Queensland, and is the first horse from that part to win the race since Ben Bolt in 1880. It was a popular victory. High Syce cost his present owner 4,000g5. _ Galonist was fourth early in the race, but finished best in the Burwood Handicap, which he won brilliantly. The owner (Wren), trainer (Moore), and Jockey (Cook) wore associated with Silent Quest’s victory on the opening day. Broekwook was prominent always, and had a comfortable win in the Windsor Handicap. Ho is raced under the partnership of the trainer (G. Chandler) and the veteran J. Scobie. The hot favourite. Gilt Edge, who had every chance, was fifth. October 21, at 11 a.m.) The Melbourne ‘ Herald,’ commenting on the Caulfield Cup, says. “It was a triumph for Trainer Holt, who has scored three wins in the Cup'm the last ten years. The connections of the winner at no time during the raco were anxious as to the outcome. Fearing interference on the rails, Duncan took his mount : to the outside, where ho made a good run to the half-mile, being fourth, and, gaining further approaching the straight entrance, soon had Taisho beaten. High Syce passed the leader. Prince Viol, haltway down the straight, and was not ridden out to win easily by two lengths in record time. While the crowd was applauding the winner, the majority of the racegoers did not overlook Amounis’s great effort in gaining second place. Amounis was checked in. the early stages, and was at the rear of the field leaving the straight, and did not gain until five furlongs from home. There he put in a great run, but High Syce was too strong for him.”
