MORNINGTON RATEPAYERS

The monthly meeting of tho Execu* tive Committee of Mornington Ratepayers’ Association was fully attended. Mr E. E. Thompson (the president) occupied the chair. A report of a special meeting held on October 7 regarding the Elgin road extension from Havelock street to Mailer street was received, and it was decided to appoint a deputation to wait on the Works Committee of the City Council to protest against the width of the road as at present proposed, and to urge tho necessity of its being formed to its full width, in order to bring it into alignment with Elgin road. In consequence of complaints made by various residents at a previous meeting of the association regarding the alarm caused by blasting operations at the Stone street quarry, a letter was sent to the town clerk requesting him to make the necessary inquiries and endeavour to have steps taken to minimise the charges used. Statements were made in regard to the actual experiences of those making the complaints. A letter was received from the town clerk in reply to the association’s conlmunication, stating that the matter had been duly investigated, and he had now to advise them that the statement that the charges had been getting heavier of late was contrary to fact, as. since May 23 only small shots had been fired, consisting of half a pound of explosive per shot. Moreover, one_ resident in Pitcairn street, when interviewed, was not quite sure whether the reports from the shots came from Logan Point or from Stone street. No complaints had been made by residents of having to keep their windows open on account of the explosive used. A second visit had been made to obtain reports from invalids, but, so far as could be ascertained, the allegation that tiieir progress toward recovery was being retarded by the force of the explosions was not well founded. The town clerk’s reply created _considerable discussion and adverse criticism. Strong disapproval was expressed by members that the allocations for improvements to Scoullnr street had not been carried forward to the current year, ns the road is in urgent need of attention. As no reply had been received from tho town clerk with regard to placing unbonded metal on roads under repair, it was decided to direct attention to the matter again, and to make the request that the association should lie informed whether any action finely been taken to prevent a recurrence of the trouble. It was decided that the Tramways Committee of the City Council be requested to go into the matter of placing an automatic signal at the Mnrybill car terminus to avert the present danger from the motor traffic. Considerable and heated discussion took place with regard to the inadequacy of the present water supply, and the following motion was carried:— “That the Mornington ratepayers view with alarm the present necessity lop curtailing the water supply, and are of opinion that early steps should he taken to furnish ratepayers with particulars as-to the quantity of water that is said to bo available. - ’
