TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING Cr. Blair presided _at the monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council. CORRESPONDENCE. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote with regard to the Nonthorn Creek bridge, and advised that the Minister had approved of a contribution of £llO on a £2 for £1 basis.—Received. The Assistant Engineer, Public VVorks Department, Allanton, wrote with regard to a small culvert on the main road neap Christie’s Gully road —No action to bo taken.
The Town Clerk, Duhedin, wrote convening a meeting of local bodies in Main Highways Districts Nos: 1G and 1? for September 27, to consider matters referred' to in the Main Highway Board’s circular with reference to heavy motor' traffic inspection.—The council’s representative at the conference (Inspector Williamson reported briefly on what had taken place. Nothing definite had been decided on. The smaller local bodies represented’ favoured the group system for collection of fees. A Vigilance Committee had been appointed to watch the progress of the measure while it was before the House. —Report received. The Secretary of the Otago Aero Club wrote in regard to some attention ' needed to the road leading to the club grounds at Green Island Flat Cr Stevenson reported what had been done in the matter. Two trucks of metal had been supplied. No more could be done at present.—Approved. The Town Clerk, Green Island, wrote in reply to the council’s letter agreeing to street lighting on the District road at Abbot’s Hill being connected with the borough system, and to pay half cost of the boundary lamp.—The letter to bo referred to the settlers interested.
The Town Clerk, Green Island, advised that Ills council was taking up the question of clearing gorse from Edward street, etc,—Noted. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote in reply to. the council’s letter with regard, to the Henley-Berwick road, advising that his council could not see its way to contribute half cost towards metalling portion of this road; other heavy vehicles used the road, and the pity lorries were paying heavy traffic fees.—Cr Kempshell pointed out that there was little local heavy traffic.— Cr Stevenson considered it was the least the City Corporation could do to carry out what the inspector had asked. —lt was decided that the chairman ICr Kempshell), and Inspector Garrett wait on the town clerk' in the matter. F. M. Fehily, Allanton, wrote with regard to straying cattle on a street in the township.—Referred to inspec tor.
The Secretary of the Walton School Committee wrote in reference to the replacing of -pipes in the water-table ■it the senool entrance, which had been removed during road repair work on the main highway at Fairfield.—Mat ter attended to.
II A Bush. Brighton, wrote with regard to the disconnection of his wire fence during road deviation works, and asking that it he connected up again. —Referred to the inspector. W. J. Kofoed. Outram. wrote with reference to some attention required to the road leading from the Waipori road to his sections up Mill Creek Gully.— Cr Kempshell and inspector to visit the place, with power to act. John Graham. Hinclon, wrote asking for permission to erect a telephone line along the road past Lamblnll; also to state on which side of the roadline it was required to be erected and the distance from the centre of the road. —Permission granted. The Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, wrote asking that a properly-formea footpath be made to give better access to the Middlemarch Post Office.—Post Office to be asked to pay half-cost to raise the Post Office frontage 15in. Dugakl Matheson, Middlemarch. asked if the council was prepared to do anything to show ratepayers the true position in regard to the proposal for the supply of electric light and power in the Strath Taieri district.— The Chairman pointed out that this matter did not rest with the council, but with the ratepayers.—Cr Carruthers spoke on the matter. The Clerk read a copy of a letter to Mr Mathc son, sent two years ago.—The council decided to reply that the position as stated in that letter still held good.
John East and others at Middlemarch wrote with regard to the flood mg of certain properties during the late heavy rams, caused through the silting up of March Creek, and asking that it be cleaned out.--Cr Carnith ers moved that the occupier of lands adjoining be asked to clean the creeks co prevent flooding The Secretary of the Strath Taicri School Committee wrote asking for ■pipes to be put in under and across the footpath at the north-east corner of the school grounds to iill m the present depression in the footpath and take storm water from the grounds.— To be left with the member for the riding and the inspector. The secretary of tho Workers’ Educational Association. Dunedin, applied for the usual annual subscription.—The sum of £1 Is voted.
Alexander J. Cameron, Outram, asked the council to finish tho gravelling of the road from Paulino’s Corner to Mrs Dow’s.—Attended to in the engineer’s report. Nelson M'Coll, Brighton, asked the council’s permission to tap a seam of coal in au adjoining property.—To be left with Or M'lntosh and tho inspector to report at next meeting. T. Miller, Brighton, asked about Information with regard to the position of occupation of land on the Brighton parade if he cleared the gor.se.—To_be left with the member for the riding and the inspector to report. R. Holland, Mnsgiel, drew attention to the state of the Lee Stream crossing between Outram and Hindon. — Left with tho inspector to attend to. G. Murdoch, Middlemarch, asked for permission to put in a crossing in Bank street opposite his residence.— Entrance granted under tho usual conditions. REPORTS. After defailing the work of the past month tho inspector recommended that the following tenders be called for next meeting:—Otokia Riding' Supply and delivery of maintenance gravel on Green Island to Taieri Mouth road, No. 5 Highway, on the following sections;— 300yds from Marshall’s to Taieri Mouth and 700yds from Brighton to Green Island. Outram Riding; That 500yds of gravel be spread on the Low road—'2ooyds of metal on Hickey’s road and •‘looyds of gravel on Church road.— Recommendations adopted _ , . Tho ranger reported _ having visited the various ridings during the month. Ho bad been called to Mossburn on September 13 with reference to wandering cows, and had taken possession of four and driven them to the owner, who refused to pay the fees. Tho sanitary inspector reported favourably on the slaughter houses in the county, on the piggeries at Green
Island Bush, and tho boiling-down works at Burnside. Seven building per mils were granted. —Received. GENERAL. Tenders were dealt with as follow: Contract No, 23, delivery of 2,000 cubic yards of gravel on the mam highways, Clark’s Junction, and Lee Stream School—Foote and Co., Ltd., £1,200, Bowman and M’Kay £1,241 13s 4d, T. G. White £1,250, E. K. Gallagher £1,266 13s 4d, Wards and Co. £1,275, Brenssell and Co, £1,300, Leckie, Ltd., £1,533 6s Bd.—-It was decided to accept the lowest tender. : _ Cr MTntosh drew attention to a slip on tho old creamery road at Brighton. —To he attended to. Cr M‘in tosh asked that some surfacing work bo attended to on tho Brighton to Scrogg’s Hill road.—To be attended to.
•Tho inspector also reported on the roads in tho Brockville district, Kaikorai Riding. Cr Stevenson and he had met the ratepayers at Mr T. Dalziel’s to discuss repairs to tho roads in that" district. After some discussion it had been resolved to have the roads properly surfaced. Any light maintenance metal required would be carted by the settlers free of cost from the Tloslyn quarry. Thanks were due to those ratepayers for this concession. ,
