THE LATE SIR GEORGE FENWICK

At last night’s meeting of the Harbour Board the chairman (Mr W. Gow) moved:—“That the board places on record its high appreciation of the civic and humanitarian services rendered to the community by the late Sir George Fenwick, and its deep sense of the loss occasioned by his death. Further, the board desires to express its sympathy with Lady Fenwick and the members of the family in their sad and irreparable loss.” The motion was carried, members standing in silence. The secretary reported that he had. sent the following telegram to Lady Fenwick from Christchurch when he and the chairman were travelling north;—“ On behalf of the members of the Otago Harbour Board I desire to extend to you and the members of your family our sincere sympathy in the demise of Sir George. Members have always appreciated bis high character and "standard of citizenship, and his wholehearted sympathy with those it* distress and need.”

This action was approved. _ Prior to the monthly meeting of th* Taieri County Council the referred to the death of Sir George Fepwick, who. he said, had died full of years and honour. He had always been interested in local bodies. His perseverance and pluck were a great incentive to young people. The chairman moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to the relatives. Cr Walter Blackie, in seconding the motion, said ha had known the deceased’s family for about sixty-five years. _ He also referred to the long connection of Sir George Fenwick had had with the Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society. The motion was then carried, councillors standing, as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased.
