PRIMARY SCHOOLS' MATCH CANTERBURY V. OTAGO Through a Letter knowledge of the game and much better combination, the primary schools’ representative hockey match between Canterbury and Otago for the Hatch Cup, played on the Oval, resulted in an easy win for Canterbury by 12 goals to 1. The ground was in a bad condition and this militated against much brilliant play. The Canterbury players kept their positions much better than the homo boys, whose chief fault was hitting too hard and too straight forward. Very little good passing work was seen from the Otago team. Bulbing off, Canterbury pressed severely,: and before two minutes had passed M’Donakl centred well, and a tricky shot by Bowden about syds out completely beat Williams (in goal). Canterbury 1, Otago 0. Up-and-down play ensued, and Canterbury’s half had not been crossed. A passing rush by the lied • forwards went right, through Otago's defence, and Bowden scored. Canterbury 3, Otago 0. The pressure was kept up, but Otago managed to pass a little way into Canterbury territory, but only for a few minutes. Canterbury came away again, and smart play took them to within striking distance. Williams was once more beaten by a shot from Burke. Canterbury 3, Otago 0. A good deal of close play took place near Otago’s goal before a free bit was awarded to them for sticks. They broke away and another free hit was awarded to them for obstruction. They went closer, to Canterbury's goal than they had been since the beginning of the game, but they were soon checked. Canterbury set up another attack, which resulted in a score for Burke. Canterbury 4, Otago 0. Otago were working strenuously, but any_ fast play by Canterbury was right against the Otago < oalie, the ground in front of the goal being in a particularly bad state. Superior play by Canterbury brought their score up to 7 at half-time. The scorers were Bowden (2) and Adams. Trainor scored for Otago from a scramble after a strong rush, but this was their only chance before time was called. Canterbury 7, Otago 1. ‘
Otago did not. score at all in the second spell ; in fact, they only c tered their opponents’ territory about four times, ami in each case they were quietly driven hack. Canterbury's combination was wonderful, and their scores were made with very lit + I" effort, although Wdliams (Otago’s goalie) saved several dangerous shots. Adams scored twice, and Burke, Galbraith, and M‘Donald each scored one, so the game finished with the scores; Canterbury 12 Otago ... | Messrs G. Hewitt and IT. Thomas were referees. Otago did not field its best team, as the Southern visitors were not at full strength. Nevertheless, there was a good deal of very interesting play in an exciting game, of which the local girls had the better ot the play. Otago attacked from the commencement, and the forwards spoiled a likely effort. The Southern backs were showing good defence, and held the local girls in check. The forward play was more individual effort than combined play, and ■ time after time the South backs'broke up _ tho attack. However, when the whistle sounded for half-time the town players had registered on two occa sions. Upon commencement the locals continued the attack, but South broke away on occasions, and "ave the defence plenty to do. But the town players were proving faster in tho back division, and the Southern attacks proved fruitless. At this stage accidents held up the game, and thereafter ( Otago held the advantage. But the South defence was very sound, and but for bright play by the full-backs and halves a good many more than four goals would have been scored. After seventy minutes of bright and vigorous play Otago proved victors by 6 goals to nil. Messrs R. S. Wallace and A. Chapman capably controlled the game.
