NORTHERN-UNION CUP MATCH [Pee United Press Association. I AUCKLAND, August 24. The youthful Canterbury League thirteen gave a good exhibition when they challenged for the Northern Union Cup at Car law Park tp-day. The southerners had a slight advantage in weight, but lacked the finesse of the holders of the cup. Play opened briskly, and Auckland assumed the offensive, .Brisbane and Seagar figuring in a nice passing effort that took play to Canterbury’s territory. Canterbury broke away, O’Connor starting a movement, for the ball t; go to Amos, to Sanders, the latter dropping his pass. Concerted work by the Southern forwards saw Auckland hard pressed, but Carter relieved with a bright solo effort. Faulty handling by Davidson saw Francis follow 7 up fast and catch him in possession. F '-Ison lost the ball, and Payne, trailing in support, went over for an easy try. Delgrosso converted. A line individual effort by Spillano saw Auckland sorely tried, a,ml wdien the Canterbury man was about to be tackled Green flashed up and, taking the puss at full speed, went over under the posts. Sanders added the ‘“ctxras.” Delgrosso found touch well down the field, and from tho ensuing scrum Auckland went away, .Delgrosso flashing through past Spillane, the hall going right through tho. home sido backs for Carter to finalise at tho corner. Within a lew minutes Seagar crossed under the posts, following a bright combined bout by the local .side, to he converted by Delgrosso. Auckland now led 13 to 0. tiicr a period of ragged play O’Brien broke away with the hall at his 100, to use his weight to advantage and score under tho uprights. ■ Delgrosso again converted, and the scores at half-time were:—Auckland 18, Canterbury 5. Upon resuming, Auckland again went away, and a brilliant effort by Pay no saw 7 him outpace the opposition to score Auckland’s fifth try. Gregory goaled. 23-5. Francis quickly added another score for tho northerners following neat intcrpassivig between Witty and Brisbane. Francis converted. 28-5. Canterbury then attacked, and determined dribbling by the southern forwards enabled Mayne to divo over for a try for Connors to goal. 28-10. Again' the .Canterbury men went away. Amos making a nice opening for n fine try by Spillane at the corner. 28-13. These two visitors wore playing a great game. Brisbane increased Auckland’s score after a period of ragged play, and Delgrosso converted. 33-13. Tho match ended: Auckland 47-18. Additional scorers for Auckland were Pascoe, .Payne. Delgrosso, and List, one converted by ’O’Brien. For Canterbury Amos got a try, converted by Conners. *
