CONSIDERABLE RAIDING
SEVERAL PITCHED BATTLES SHANGHAI, August IS. (Received August 19, at 10.30 a.m.) While it is definitely untrue that hostilities have broken out during the week-end, reports indicate that irregulars on both sides are showing considerable raiding activities, but both arc unwilling to precipitate war. The Soviet is afraid of the entrance of White Russians into Siberia, where the peasantry arc heart and soul for the Whites. A raid by Soviet forces near Manchouli, 12 miles within tho. Chinese border, resulted in a three hours battle. Twenty-seven Chinese were killed. The Chinese repulsed a cavalry raid. Mongols raided a Chinese town near Khaihir, but were eventually driven off. Tho Manchurians arc preparing for an outbreak of major hostilities. Ten thousand Soviet troops descended on Jalanor, the fight lasting all day, resulting in the Chinese losing sixty killed. The Russian losses arc unknown.—United Service. A UNITED CHINA PURCHASING AEROPLANES HONGKONG August 17. At a meeting at tho office of the Commissioner of Foreign Affairs at Canton yesterday it was stated that, in view of Siiio-Rnssian affairs halving assumed a grave aspect, the Bureau of Aviation was preparing a .scheme for the expansion of aerial activities. It is now drawing up n scheme for the purchase of TOD machines from an American aeroplane company. Twenty will bo lighting and twenty attacking planes, ten scouting, two bombing, and ton for training. Tho cost —2,000.000 Hongkong dollars—is being raised partly by public subscription. Tho Stale Department. ,has declared itself without inlormalion in reference to a "London despatch stating that the Chinese Minister he'' is to notify the signatories to the Kellogg Pact that Russia began tin; offensive on the Manchurian border.
