NO MANDATE FROM FARMERS
MR PRISON AND THE TAX SOUTH CANTERBURY PRESIDENT OBJECTS [Pkb United Press Association.] TIM All Uj August 17. Mr P. 11. Talbot, president of the South Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, expressed surprise at the statement made in the House by Mr W. J. Poison, the memher for Stratford and president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, relative to the discussion on the taxation proposals in the Budget. Mr Poison stated that he was “speaking; for tho farmers,” but in Mr Talbot’s opinion Mr Poison bad spoken out of his turn. Mr Talbot said that Mr Poison, while president, had received no mandatory powers from tho various branches of tho Farmers’ Union as yet to speak on their behalf. In fact, that .day ho (Mr Talbot) had received a telegram asking that delegates bo appointed from the South Canterbury branch to attend a conference in Wellington on, Thursday next. SOUUTHLAND..FARMERS’ RESOLUTION. -—— ' INVERCARGILL, August 18. The Southland Executive of tho Farmers’ Union discussed the Government’s taxation proposals on Saturday, and the following resolution was carried; — “That this executive views with grave apprehension the super-tax proposed to be put on the land, and also the reduction in mortgage exemption!, and considers that if put into effect they will react on production. It is further requested that tho Government should economise in every possible way until the Budget is satisfactorily balanced.”
