PLUNKET SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children was held in the Plunket office yesterday morning. There were present Mrs Johnstone (in the chair). Lady Allen, Mesdames os. M'George, Marshall Macdonald, W. Wilson. If Ross Williams, Cairney, Gleghorn, Hanan, Watson, J. 0 M'George, Mandeno, Brown, Miss Reid, Sister Nora, and the secretary. Apologies were received from Mrs ‘Lunninghame, the Misses Oppenheim, and Miss Joachim - _ . c _ The rosmnalior of Sister Perrin from the staff of the Karitanc Harris Hospital was received with regret, the members of committee expressing the, hope that she wo>'id again enter the society s service on completion of the course of midwifery training upon which she was then entering. „ T ™ t T The appointment of Miss I. L. iiuiit ro fill the vacancy on the nursing staff at the Karitane-Harris Hospital was confirmed. . . . nr a A letter was received from Mi A Hart, of Messrs Simpson and Hart, Welherstones, saying that ho would be pleased to sena the society a donation of daffodil blooms for the Daffodil Day Street sale on Friday, October 4, provided that the committee could make arrangements for the picking of the blooms.—Mrs M'George intimated that friends of the society in Lawrence who had undertaken the picking of the blooms last year, had expressed their willingness to do so again this year.— This kind offer of assistance was gratefully received. The Matron of the Karitane-Harns Hospital reported as follows for the month ended July:—Patients admitted during th© moiitli —13 motiiGrs, 1J babies; patients discharged mothers, 23 babies; largest number in residence on any one day—(> motlieis, 29 babies. Patients were admitted from Oturehua, Christchurch, Puerua, Tapanui, Mosgiel, Herbert, Seaclilf, Portobeilo, and Dunedin and suburbs. All the patients in hospital are making satisfactory progress. The end of .term lectures and demonstrations usually conducted by Miss Pattrick were given in July by Miss Hooper. ■ There are 20 Plunket and 14 Karitane nurses in training. Miss Mary Shand and Miss Gladys Timms commenced their* course of training as .Karitane nurses during the month. Tlie Karitane nurses’ exanimation was held on July 18. The following candidates sat for this examination, and all passed with credit:— Nurses Cleverley, Fountain, Mander, and Knight. On Saturday, July 13, a practical demonstration (followed by a talk) on baby care was given to fiftyfour Girl Guides from the combined districts of Anderson’s Bay, North-cast Valley, and Woodhaugh. Foodstuffs, etc.,- for demonstration at Y.W.C.A. Health Week campaign were prepared at Karitane Hospital. Students from the Otago Medical School visited the hospital during the months of July and August. The Plunket nurses for North and Central Dunedin districts for the month—:Babies on the list, 726: other children on the list, 212; babies breast fed (including partly), 227; new eases for the month (babies only), SO. babies breast fed (including partly), new cases, 46; visits paid to homes, 668; visits paid to Plunket rooms, Stuart street, 282 mothers, 218 babies, and 34 older children; Mornington, 85 mothers, 67 babies, and 12 older children; Roslyn, 78 mothers. 72 babies, and 10 older children ; Kelsey-Yaralia Kindergarten, 86 mothers, 64 babies, and 48 older chil-

dren. Number of bottles of humanised milk sent out from Taieri and Peninsula Dairy, 3,034. The Plunket nurse for the Caversham district and outstations (north line) reported for the month; —Babies on the list, 166; babies breast fed (including partly), 53; new cases for the month (babies only), 18; babies breast fed (including partly), new cases, 15; visits paid to homes, 219; visits paid to Plur ket rooms, Stuart street, from Caversham, 61 mothers, 50 babies, and 9 older children; from outstations, 61 mothers, 41 babies, and 11 older children. The following visits were paid to outstations:—Port Chalmers -5, Burkes 1, Ravenshourno 5, Macandrew Bay 4. The Plunket nurse for the Anderson’s Bay district and oiitstations (south line) reported for the month:—Babies on the list, 263; older children on the list, ' 40; babies breast fed (including partly), 138; new cases for the month (babies only), 12; babies breast fed (including partly), new cases, 10; visits paid to Plunket rooms, Anderson's Bay, 129 mothers, 118 babies, and 32 older children; Mosgiel, 86 mothers, SO babies, and 18 older children; Outram, 15 mothers, 14 babies, and 8 older children; Green Island, 3.1 mothers, 28 babies, and 12 older children; visits paid to homes—Anderson’s Bay 100, Mosgiel 36, Outram 4, Abbotsford. Green Island, and Burnside 20. Tha following visits were paid to outsta tions:—Mosgiel 5, Outram 2, Abbotsford 4, Green Island 4. and Burnside 4. The Plunket nurse for the South Dunedin district reported for. the month:—Number of babies on the list, 502; babies breast fed f including partly), 144; new cases for tne month (babies only), 17; babies breast fed (including partly), new cases, 15; visits paid to homes, 252; visits paid to Plunket rooms. King Edward street, South Dunedin. 230 mothers, ’222 babies, and 35 older: children.
