A request was made by the Royal Life Saving Society to the Minister oi internal Allan's (Mr P. A. do la Perrelle) for an increase in the Government subsidy from £IOO to £SOO a year. The deputation consisted ot members of Parliament. Mr de la Perrello was sympathetic, and said he would bring tiio application befpre Cabinet. On Thursday evening, at the Embassy Salon, Messrs Butterfield, Ltd., entertained the employees of their ware house and factory, with their friends, at a social reunion. The managing director, Mr M. 0. Butterfield, with Mrs Butterfield, spared no pains to make the evening as enjoyable as possible. There was an attendance of nearly '2OO. Messrs Sneddon. Richardson, and C. Anderson undertook the arrangements of the games and dances._ the music being supplied by an efficient orchestra. Mr Sneddon, on behalf or the employe's and friends, thanked Mr Butterfield for his kindness, and stressed the. point of mutual relationship between the employed and the employer. Mr Butterfield emphasised his pleasure at the co-operation of all hands con earned in connection with the firm’s affairs. One of the pleasing of the incidents of the evening was the presence of Mr Butterfield’s own mother at the advanced age of eighty-six. THE MENACE IN A CROWD.
