LOST ROYAL LETTERS
FOUND If} SECRET DRAWER LONDON, July 22. Royal letters written in the hand of King Charles 11. during the years when he was a fugitive from England to Sir George Carteret, at that time Lieu-tenant-Governor of Jersey, and to the bailiffs and curates of the island, have been discovered ,in a secret drawer of an old piece of Jersey furniture at a sale conducted on the death of Madame Humbert, a descendant of Carteret’s on the maternal side. The existence of the letters had been known, but thirty years ago they disappeared, and no trace whatever was found until Mr Walter Fox, an antique dealer, conducting the sale, found flusecret drawer. One letW is Charles’s farewell to Jersey, and an acknowledgment of the islanders’ loyalty to' the throne. This was written after the Battle of Nasehy. Another urges .the speeding up ol supplies which the islanders consented to give him. and was written from his court at FH-abeth Castle Jersey. A third letter gives instructions and pci mission for "firming a company from among thos~ deriving trade in the pre mier industry of the island, at thai ■time the manufacture of worsted stock ings. The letters, under the will made ti year ago by Madam'o Humbert, are to bo handed over to the Jersey Society.
