Mr Michael Alexander Kinney tools his seat on the Otago Land Board to-! day in succession to Mr C ,J. Inder,who was a member for fourteen years.. The deputy commissioner (Mr John Macdonald) welcomed Mr Kinney. On the motion of Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr Munro,, it was resolved to record on the minutes the board’s appreciation of Mr Inder’s valuable services. Mr J. Ca ugh ley, late of Weiington,who is educational administrator in Fiji, had'a very serious illness a little time ago, but New Zealand visitors who have just returned from the Islands state that he has now completely recovered and is enjoying excellent health. Mr W. B. Henley, of Napier, one of the Bhodos Scholars for tho current year, has left for Montreal, where h* will represent New Zeaand at the International Student’s Conference. He then goes to England to take up las Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford. Mr John Cameron, district traffic manager of railways for the Wellington district, retired last week oil superannuation after completing forty 3’ears in the service of the department. Mr Cameron joined the railways sendee in. ISS9, and, after filling, with distinction, many important positions, he was. appointed to the high position which he recently vacated.
Our Wanganui correspondent telegraphs; The death has occurred of Mr S. J. Reid, managing editor of the ‘ llnngitikei Advocate.’ Deceased for many years worked as a journalist in that'district, being connected with the local paper there, and also for a time representative of the Auckand 1 Herald.’ Subsequently lie came to Feilding, where he was representative of the Manawatu ‘ Times,’ later joining this ‘ Chronicle.’ In 191" he joined the ‘Herald’s ’ commercial staff, which position ho relinquished recently to become managing editor of the ‘ Advocate.’ He was a man of many activities, being particularly keen in fostering the interests of'swimming and athletics. A< an organiser he possessed marked ability, as shown in his recent success as secretary of tho band contest held in February. Deceased also acted __ as special correspondent for several New Zealand papers. . . . A recommendation of_ the Finance Committee of the Hospital Board is that Mr J. W. Scurr be appointed,' a member of the Joint Relations Hospital Committee, the other members of which are the chairman of the board (Mr W. E. S. Knight), the chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr A. F. Quelch), and Mr W. Morgan. Staying at the Excelsior, Hotel are Miss ‘Sheddon (London), Miss M. 1., Stuart (Canada), Mr J. M'Callum: (Auckland), Mr and Mrs E. E. Humphries, Mr J. M‘Kinky. Grand Hotel guests include Messrs G. F. Hill. H. D. Kerr, and H. Welsh (Auckland). Messrs R. B. Smith, M. \V E. Short, and C. Huehes (Wellington),, Sir H. Margolish (Christchurch).-
