DESIGN IN HOUSES
HEW FORM ARISING Between the sharp contrast” of many special types of house design copied from English, Spanish, and Californian models, a style is slowly being developed in Melbourne lesidential areas that will suit the climate and conditions of family life, although some of the graces of exotic forms have not been discarded. In the residence which has been erected by Messrs Dickson and Yorston, in Brighton road, St. Kilda, the pillared portico and casernented and semicircular arched window retain one of the most pleasing features of English cottage architecture, but the highpitched roof has been discarded for one of sufficient angle to throw off all rains and give balance to the design. This form of roof construction is simple, strong, and economical. In place of the conventional fluted Marseilles tiles large, semi-circular, or “half-pipe.' cordovas have been used. In this the Spanish influence has been retained not only for its distinctive form and colour note, but because the curved surface gives better resistance than flat tiles to hot summer sun rays. Those tiles also supply a bright and durable substitute for the conventional balustrade over the portico. The walls of the building arc brick, brightened by cement dressing The motor drive passes under the porch, the extension of which over the drive makes a hold frontal feature. The house has seven rooms, the reception apartments being grouped around a wide hall with double-door openings. The kitchen is entered through a verandah, from the rear.
