NATIONAL THRIFT

DEPOSITS IH SAVINGS BANKS

LONDON, July 30. Sir Spencer Portal, chairman of the Trustee Savings Bank Association, announced at the annual meeting of the association at Harrogate an increase in deposits of more than £8,000,000 last year, making a total of £155,000,000. The increase in tho number of depositors was 48,000. A letter from Mr Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated: “I am glad to see that the funds of the bank have grown during the past vear more rapidly than during any other vear since 1920. It is of the highest importance to the economic welfare of the country that great numbers of the citizens should contribute to the national savings, and I am very sensible how greatly the trustee savings hanks have encouraged them to do so.”
