CROMWELL NOTES
[From Our Correspondent.]
The latest information regarding the Kawarau is that the gates may possibly be closed on Wednesday Local claimholders sought a closing on Saturday, but this did not coincide with the proposals of the Cromwell Development Company. The river is not likely to fall any lower than at present. The- effects ol strengthening sunshine on j the snow deposits is countering the influence of any Host, and may he said to daily balance the level of the stream. It has certainly been a lomarkable season, but in the ordinary course of events a low level cannot be expected much longer. Additions to the High School have been completed, but have not relieved recent congestion. Further accommodation is sought, and Mr Bodkin, M.P. has been able to give the local committee every hope of an early vote by Cabinet for the work. Jn addition to the school two other buildings in the town are rented for the manual classes.
There was another wintry Ispell over the week-end,.and.on Saturday morning snow was lower on the hills, than at-any time during the season. Snow has again fallen on the mountains. |
